- How have the medical costs been after the COVID-19 pandemic? | PH Chronicle
How have the medical costs been after the COVID-19 pandemic? Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami March 8, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM Communicable diseases, COVID 19, Research findings Data from 3,792 persons (18–64 years old) who were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the first COVID wave in 2020 were gathered for the report from an Optum database. Three cohorts were the subject of the reporting: those who were not hospitalized, those who were hospitalized but were not admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and those who were admitted to the ICU. The healthcare burden grew for both healthy and high-risk persons. New blood-related diagnoses accounted for the largest increase, rising by more than 150% over the baseline period. Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic problems increased by 123% in healthy individuals, while digestive disorders increased by 76%. The post-acute phase of COVID-19 resulted in a 578% rise in inpatient visit expenses and an outpatient visit cost increase even for those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase. - A game changer in cancer care: Tata Hospital to unveil world’s largest nuclear therapeutic facility | PH Chronicle
A game changer in cancer care: Tata Hospital to unveil world’s largest nuclear therapeutic facility Content Editor: Dr. Tanya Tanu January 23, 2024 at 3:30:00 PM Cancer, Radioisotope Therapy, Non-Communicable Diseases The main principle behind radioisotope therapy, one of the best treatment modalities for cancer, is the selective accumulation of specific radiation-emitting isotopes in cancerous tissues with minimal damage to healthy tissues. A therapeutic nuclear facility planned to be launched at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), which will consist of the following features: ‘Hotbeds’ for treating cancers of the thyroid, liver, pancreas, and abdomen using radioisotope therapy A state-of-the-art cyclotron unit in collaboration with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology. A few of the precautionary measures undertaken are: Segregation of patients undergoing radioisotope therapy until treatment completion to prevent radioactive transmission to others through bodily fluids, including urine and feces Setting up ‘Delay Decay’ specialized containment systems to collect and treat excreted radioactive waste for a decay period of 3-4 days where it decays naturally. This will significantly reduce its radioactivity before releasing it into sewage systems. Previous Next
- Importance of ventilation against respiratory illnesses | PH Chronicle
Importance of ventilation against respiratory illnesses Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay Kelkar April 24, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Respiratory infections, Ventilation, Indoor pollution Recently, the CDC revised its guidelines for combating respiratory infections, emphasizing the need to lower indoor airborne particle concentrations. This is the result of a decline in COVID and flu cases since December. The CDC now emphasizes proper ventilation as a crucial tactic in addition to immunization and hand hygiene. They stress that ventilation is only one layer of defense and not a perfect one. Good ventilation techniques are beneficial all year, but particularly under the following circumstances: There are many viruses in the community. Individuals are either ill, recuperating, or exposed to illness. People are susceptible to serious illnesses. The recommendations include the following actions to enhance ventilation: Taking in a breath of fresh outdoor air. Ensuring that HVAC systems are operating properly ; MERV-13 or higher filters are preferred. Additional actions such as exhaust venting and air circulation, air purifiers, and UV air treatment. The CDC also suggests using portable CO2 monitors to gauge indoor air quality and recommends moving activities outdoors whenever possible to further reduce transmission risk. Previous Next

- Abdominal Obesity in India- An NFHS data analysis | PH Chronicle
Abdominal Obesity in India- An NFHS data analysis Content Editor: Dr. Shubham November 26, 2024 at 3:32:02 PM Central Obesity, Research findings The prevalence of abdominal obesity in India is alarmingly high, with 40% of women and 12% of men affected. The National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021) data reveals that 5-6 out of 10 women aged 30-49 years are abdominally obese. A secondary data analysis of NFHS-5 reveals that this condition is more prevalent among older age groups, urban residents, wealthier sections, and non-vegetarians. In Telangana, 35-50% of women are abdominally obese, highlighting a significant public health concern. Abdominal obesity is linked to chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to promote physical activity and healthy dietary habits , especially in rural areas where economic transitions have reduced female workforce participation. Addressing these factors is crucial for mitigating the health risks associated with abdominal obesity and improving overall public health outcomes in India. Click here to read more Previous Next
