Unveiling the Genome India Project: Mapping the Human Genetic Landscape

India being a land of diverse cultures with over 4600 population groups, shares a varied genetic makeup. This gave rise to the need to create a ‘human reference genome’ for the Indian population. The Genome India Project, initiated in 2020 by the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, is dedicated to sequence the human genome in the country. Under the project; 10,000 human genomes have been sequenced which will further be used to create a genetic map of India.

Maternal health in peril: Apathy of Family and High Costs Impede Maternal Healthcare

A significant decline in the Maternal Mortality Ratio was observed from 130 in 2014-16 to 97 per 100,000 live births in 2018-20. Despite the improvement in the national figures, some states are still burdened by high maternal deaths. Apathetic families, inadequate male involvement, lack of awareness and ignorance in the family, and delay in seeking care are some of the main reasons for bad maternal health outcomes.
