Girls and women subjected to Rape or sexual assault as children counts over 370 million globally-UNICEF Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar October 30, 2024 at 12:22:46 PM Children safety, sexual violence Data shows that sexual violence against children is pervasive, cutting across geographical, cultural, and economic boundaries. Most childhood sexual violence occurred in the adolescenct age groups with significant spike between 14 and 17 and it showed children that who experienced sexual violence are more likely to suffer repeated abuse. To break this cycle and in mitigating long term impacts of such trauma, it is essential to implement targeted interventions during adolescence. Often the survivors carry trauma of sexual violence into adulthood which leads them to face higher risks of sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse, social isolation and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression challenging them in getting healthy relationships. It highlights the need for increased investment in data collection to capture full scale of sexual violence against children. Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • Variations in the incidence of stroke: Findings from the stroke registries | PH Chronicle

Variations in the incidence of stroke: Findings from the stroke registries Content Editor: Dr. Shayari Nag May 10, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Stroke, Stroke Burden, Research Findings, Noncommunicable diseases The National Stroke Registry Programme established five population-based stroke registries (PBSRs ) to measure stroke incidence, mortality, and its subtypes in urban and rural populations. The registry uniquely employs the STEPS approach and tracks both fatal and non-fatal strokes in hospitals, imaging centers, and the community, including deaths recorded within 28 days of stroke onset. The study's findings reveal: The average stroke incidence rate was 138.1 per 100,000 people but varied significantly between regions (from 96.6 to 187.6). Case fatality rates also varied widely , ranging from 15.3 to 46.6 per 100,000 population. Stroke risk was higher in men over 30 (1 in 10 chance vs. 1 in 15 chance for women). Rural areas in three specific locations (Cuttack, Cachar, Tirunelveli) had twice the stroke incidence compared to urban areas. Ischemic stroke was the most frequent type observed. Hypertension, diabetes, and current tobacco use were identified as the most common risk factors. Recognizing the higher stroke burden in rural areas, this study provides crucial data to guide policy and resource allocation for improved stroke prevention and treatment across India. Comparison of effects of the pandemic on the progress of SDGs: Study findings Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal July 30, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM COVID-19, Sustainable Development Goals, Inequities A recent study in the PLOS ONE Journal analyzes the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on 43 SDG health indicators across 185 countries. The study also compared the actual progress to projected progress based on pre-pandemic trends to assess the pandemic's impact on global health. It draws attention to the widening gap in global health, with low-income nations predicted to have a 34% decline in infectious disease progress loss as opposed to 6% in high-income nations. Low-income countries may experience a 16% average progress loss across health indicators, while high-income countries might see a 3% loss. Extrapolation was done using the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) pre-COVID-19 economic projections to predict health outcomes from 2020 to 2030. A comparison of baseline (pre-COVID-19) and post-COVID-19 scenarios revealed substantial economic growth losses , especially in low—and lower-middle-income countries (42% and 28%, respectively) compared to high—and upper-middle-income countries (15% and 7%, respectively). The study highlights the widening gap between rich and poor nations during the pandemic. While wealthier countries could better manage the crisis, poorer nations faced more significant challenges due to limited resources. This study points towards action plans to diminish inequalities as a part of global health agendas. Click here to read more. Previous Next
