WHO makes landmark decision in management of alcohol use disorders Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy August 23, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Global health,Public Globally, nearly 300 million people are suffering with alcohol use disorders , leading to nearly 300 deaths yearly. To date, drugs for managing alcohol abuse have not been part of EML. This year WHO made a significant move in recognizing the public health burden of alcohol abuse by including its treatment in the EML. Both Acamprosate and Naltrexone are WHO (2016) recommended medication to treat alcohol dependance. This inclusion will aid in the implementation of the Global Alcohol Action Plan 2022-2030, which outline initiatives to improve the prevention and treatment capacity of health and social care systems for alcohol use disorders as envisioned by the 75th World Health Assembly in 2022. - Study finds that polymyxin resistance in India is higher than the global average. | PH Chronicle
Study finds that polymyxin resistance in India is higher than the global average. Content Editor: Dr. Sangya June 3, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Antimicrobial Resistance, Research Findings A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy found the prevalence of polymyxin-resistant bacterial strains in India. Polymyxins, a last-resort antibiotic class for multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, have seen increased resistance due to their extensive use. The meta-analysis of 41 studies with 24,589 gram-negative bacterial isolates found a 15% resistance rate in India, compared to the global average of 10%. Tamil Nadu reported the highest resistance at 28.3%, followed by Uttar Pradesh (16.3%) and Odisha (15.9%). Clinical sources accounted for 89% of resistant isolates, while environmental sources accounted for 11%. The use of polymyxins in the healthcare sector and poultry farms as growth promoters contributes to the rising incidence of polymyxin resistance. Among the resistant isolates, 8.4% contained plasmid-borne mcr genes, which confer resistance to colistin and can spread between bacterial species. The study emphasizes the need for periodic surveillance and sustained measures to contain the spread of resistance and to develop improved polymyxins. Click here to read more. Previous Next

Tobacco Control in India: Progress, Challenges and Future Directions Content Editor: Dr M Kasif May 19, 2025 at 7:04:38 AM Tobacco control, Air pollution, Secondhand smoke The G lobal A dult T obacco S urvey, India 2016-17 highlights reduced secondhand smoke exposure, improved air quality, and less cigarette waste, benefiting vulnerable groups. However, experts stress that reducing public smoking alone is insufficient without stronger enforcement and awareness. Despite legal measures, the R eport on T obacco C ontrol in India 2022 reveals inconsistent enforcement, with cigarette shops displaying smoking triggers and QR-code complaints indicating frequent violations. Weak enforcement sustains tobacco use and poses long-term health risks. Experts warn that smoking, combined with genetics, diet and history of tobacco use, greatly increases cancer risk . Modern cigarettes may contain new carcinogens, worsening health despite reduced smoking rates. Stronger enforcement, continuous awareness and stricter regulations are crucial to making India's smoking ban truly effective in protecting health and the environment. Previous Next
