  • Globally, nearly 300 million people are suffering with alcohol use disorders, leading to nearly 300 deaths yearly.

  • To date, drugs for managing alcohol abuse have not been part of EML.

  • This year WHO made a significant move in recognizing the public health burden of alcohol abuse by including its treatment in the EML.

  • Both Acamprosate and Naltrexone are WHO (2016) recommended medication to treat alcohol dependance.

  • This inclusion will aid in the implementation of the Global Alcohol Action Plan 2022-2030, which outline initiatives to improve the prevention and treatment capacity of health and social care systems for alcohol use disorders as envisioned by the 75th World Health Assembly in 2022.
