Recent trial finds Metformin beneficial as a cancer-preventive agent Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy May 25, 2024 at 3:04:11 PM Research findings, Oncology, non-communicable diseases, clinical trial A case-control research was undertaken to explore benefits of metformin use for MPN, using population registries of Denmark. People diagnosed with MPN between 2010-2018, were taken as cases and controls were selected from the Danish general population matched for age and sex. Metformin use data was secured from the country’s National registry of prescriptions. History of Metformin use in Cases before their diagnosis of MPN was determined and compared with the age-sex matched control group to estimate adjusted odds ratio to check association between metformin use and MPN. The study concluded that odds of MPN was significantly lower in those with a history of metformin use. [OR: 0.84 (0.73-0.96)] Furthermore, the strength of association displayed a significant dose-response relationship with rising treatment durations and these results were consistent in both sexes and all age groups. - Malaria puzzle: Where climate and socioeconomic factors intersect | PH Chronicle
Malaria puzzle: Where climate and socioeconomic factors intersect Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad August 31, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Malaria, Climate, Urbanisation Malaria continues to be a public health problem in many African and Southeast Asian nations, including India, despite improvements in malaria-related morbidity and mortality. With data from the 69th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), a cross-sectional study was carried out in Haryana to investigate the influence of climatic and socioeconomic factors in predicting population vulnerability to malaria in India. The study confirms that households in high and moderately high climatically vulnerable states were more likely to experience malaria. A further noteworthy finding of this study is that urban households are more susceptible to malaria. One cannot undervalue the significance of waste collection and sustainable disposal of it, a lack of which makes urban homes more susceptible to malaria. This may also be the result of spatial changes brought on by: Slum growth Unplanned urbanization Migration Poorly executed developmental operations. Results from this study also show how crucial it is to include local, district, and state-level malaria management programmes with climate change. Programmes for behavioral change communication, and awareness must be paired with this. Recognizing that a rise in living standards will significantly help combat the malaria epidemic is vital. Nevertheless, targeted preventive actions taken by state and local governments can significantly address the problem and should support all-encompassing development efforts . Previous Next

- Are Forest (Conservation) Rules, 2022 violative of the Forest Right Act, 2006? | PH Chronicle
Are Forest (Conservation) Rules, 2022 violative of the Forest Right Act, 2006? Content Editor : Dr. Yamini Singh March 9, 2023 at 12:34:32 PM Global Health, Deforestation The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change in June 2022 , notified the Forest (Conservation) Rules 2022, which prescribed the mechanism for the diversion of forest land for non-forest purposes. New Rules omitted a clause (present in 2014 and 2017 Rules) that required any proposal to mandatorily have the consent of local tribespeople and other traditional forest dwellers of the area , before proceeding for Stage 1 clearance (approval of central government). This was pointed out by National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) highlighting violations of rights like pushing the State and Union Territory governments for diversion of forest land at the earliest and unfair FRA compliance reports. NCST says the requirement for consent and recognition of rights prior to stage 1 clearance provided a legal space for the completion of the process for recognition of rights under FRA.
