The rise of dengue cases in America Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma March 5, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Communicable diseases, Outbreaks In the Americas, the number of dengue cases has been increasing rapidly . In the first five weeks of 2024, 11 countries have reported a rise in the number of infections. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiologic alert, stating that compared to the same period in 2023, cases have increased by 157% and are 225% above the five-year average. Last year, the Americas recorded over 4.5 million cases , and this year they have already recorded more than 6,73,000 dengue infections , including 700 severe cases and 102 deaths. Brazil has reported the highest number of dengue infections with over 4,55,000 cases . All four serotypes of the virus are circulating in the Americas region this year, with varying proportions in different countries. However, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Mexico are experiencing a circulation of all four serotypes. In January, Brazil launched a dengue vaccination campaign, targeting 3.2 million people with the Qdenga vaccine manufactured by Takeda . This made Brazil the first country to offer a dengue vaccine through its public health system. PAHO, in its latest alert, urged countries to intensify efforts to control Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, enhance surveillance, and ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment. Previous Next

Mapping asthma hot spots: Uncovering urban trends and pandemic impacts in New York State Mapping asthma hot spots: Uncovering urban trends and pandemic impacts in New York State Content Editor: Dr Ghurumourthy October 3, 2024 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemiology, Chronic Respiratory Diseases, Asthma Asthma, a chronic lung condition, can be managed through proper clinical care and self-management. The New York State Department of Health analyzed asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits from 2016 to 2022 using Esri’s Emerging Hot Spot Analysis. The study revealed urban areas like Buffalo, Rochester, and NYC had significant asthma hot spots , with ED rates decreasing during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. While many persistent hot spots became sporadic, some areas in NYC, particularly in the Bronx and Manhattan, saw intensifying hot spots. This method enhances traditional mapping by identifying emerging geographic patterns and can be used to evaluate the impact of local-level interventions for asthma and other chronic conditions. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemns mandatory prescription rule of generic drugs The Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemns mandatory prescription rule of generic drugs Content Editor: Dr. Sumana Mukhopadhyay August 30, 2023 The Hindu Pharma, Generic drugs, Rules and regulations The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urgently called for government intervention against the National Medical Commission's (NMC) new rule on prescribing generic drugs. The IMA emphasized concerns about compromised drug quality due to weak national quality control systems, posing risks to patient health. Merely 0.1% of domestically manufactured drugs are quality checked, the association noted. The IMA suggested that if the government and NMC mandate generic drug prescriptions, pharmaceutical firms should produce unbranded drugs. The association contended that doctors' primary duty is patient well-being, while drug dispensing is a pharmacist's role, arguing that patient interests are not served by this shift. They questioned the necessity of licensing branded drugs if doctors are restricted from prescribing them, as modern medicine relies on doctor-prescribed dispensation.

- India's hunger index battle: The disputed ranking unveiled | PH Chronicle
India's hunger index battle: The disputed ranking unveiled Content Editor: Dr Sumana Mukhopadhyay October 24, 2023 at 2:28:26 PM Global health, malnutrition India is ranked 111 out of 125 countries in the 2023 Global Hunger Index, with progress against hunger nearly stagnant since 2015. To assess hunger, the GHI considers multiple indicators, including undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality. The GHI score for India is 28.7 out of 100, categorizing the severity of hunger as "serious." For the third year in a row, the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India has challenged the country's Global Hunger Index (GHI) position, asserting that the methodology used is fundamentally imprecise. The ministry pointed to a significant disparity between its Poshan Tracker portal's data and the GHI's figures for child wasting prevalence. The GHI emphasizes using consistent data sources and methodologies for international comparisons, which can be the reason behind the disparity. Previous Next
