COVID-19 triggers early progression of Type 1 Diabetes in children Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi July 24, 2024 at 4:49:41 PM COVID-19, type 1 diabetes A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that contracting COVID-19 may hasten the onset of apparent symptoms of Type 1 diabetes in children, an autoimmune illness. Researchers from the Institute of Diabetes Research, Helmholtz Munich, Germany, who were involved in this study discovered that children with islet autoantibodies, or early-stage Type 1 diabetes , developed diagnosable symptoms of the illness more quickly following a COVID-19 infection than children who were not infected. Unusual appetite and thirst, frequent urination, exhaustion, and blurred vision are all signs of type 1 diabetes. From 2020 to 2023, the Fr1da study (for Type 1 diabetes) tested children for both COVID-19 antibodies and islet autoantibodies, providing valuable data on the link between SARS-CoV-2 and Type 1 diabetes. The study found that the rate of Type 1 diabetes diagnoses among children in the early stages of the disease increased more rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic rates. - The rise of dengue cases in America | PH Chronicle
The rise of dengue cases in America Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma March 5, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Communicable diseases, Outbreaks In the Americas, the number of dengue cases has been increasing rapidly . In the first five weeks of 2024, 11 countries have reported a rise in the number of infections. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiologic alert, stating that compared to the same period in 2023, cases have increased by 157% and are 225% above the five-year average. Last year, the Americas recorded over 4.5 million cases , and this year they have already recorded more than 6,73,000 dengue infections , including 700 severe cases and 102 deaths. Brazil has reported the highest number of dengue infections with over 4,55,000 cases . All four serotypes of the virus are circulating in the Americas region this year, with varying proportions in different countries. However, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Mexico are experiencing a circulation of all four serotypes. In January, Brazil launched a dengue vaccination campaign, targeting 3.2 million people with the Qdenga vaccine manufactured by Takeda . This made Brazil the first country to offer a dengue vaccine through its public health system. PAHO, in its latest alert, urged countries to intensify efforts to control Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, enhance surveillance, and ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment. Previous Next

BU-LABNET to Skin NTD LABNET: Expansion of services. Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma November 29, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Skin disease, Buruli ulcer The fifth annual meeting of the Buruli ulcer PCR laboratories (BU-LABNET) network at Noguchi Memorial Institute marked a pivotal moment in addressing Buruli ulcer and skin NTDs. Transitioning to Skin NTD LABNET signified an expanded collaborative focus in the WHO African Region. This will help enhance skin disease diagnosis, management, and health access in endemic regions. BU-LABNET was formed in 2019 under WHO. The BU-LABNET unites 13 labs across nine countries to advance Buruli ulcer diagnosis using standardized PCR protocols. They are supported by global organizations with a broader aim, encompassing skin NTDs for cost-effective, quality diagnosis expansion. Recommendations for BU-LABNET include: Harmonizing procedures Implementing quality assessment Advocating for new labs Creating training tools Promoting collaborative research National programs are advised to do the following: Enhance lab collaboration Conduct training Explore integrated sample transport Partners were urged to support integration goals, assist in sample collection, and identify funding sources. BU-LABNET envisions expanding its molecular platform to include additional skin NTDs and laboratories. Thereby optimizing cost–effectiveness and increasing access to quality-assured diagnosis. For 91 cents per pregnancy, the study showed that this intervention averted 249 maternal hospitalizations, and 1592 incidents of maternal sepsis, infection, and mortality. $32,661 was saved overall for every 100,000 pregnancies. According to the primary author, this can assist ministries in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) , which have twice the prevalence of chronic diseases as affluent countries, in cost-effectively allocating their limited resources .
