- Closing the gaps: Improving quality of life for older adults with HIV | PH Chronicle
Closing the gaps: Improving quality of life for older adults with HIV Content Editor: Dr Ghurumourthy October 3, 2024 at 3:30:00 PM HIV/AIDS, Quality of Life, Infectious diseases A study using data from the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) between 2017 and 2022 assessed quality of life (QoL) indicators among U.S. people living with HIV (PWH) aged ≥50 years. The study focused on five QoL indicators set by the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) for 2025: self-rated health, access to mental health services, unemployment, food insecurity, and housing stability. Despite advances in HIV treatment, minimal progress was observed across most indicators. In 2022, only 65% of PWH aged ≥50 years reported good or better health, falling short of the 95% goal. Unmet need for mental health services rose to 21.5%, while unemployment decreased slightly from 11.7% to 8%. Hunger or food insecurity improved, particularly for those aged ≥65 years, meeting the 2025 target. However, housing instability remained a significant issue, with 12.5% of older PWH experiencing unstable housing, far from the 7.4% goal. The findings highlight the need for tailored interventions, focusing on mental health services, employment support, and housing stability to meet the NHAS 2025 goals. Multisectoral approaches and continued monitoring are essential to improving the overall QoL for older PWH. Click here to read more. Previous Next

- Can low GI food reduce the risk of diabetes? | PH Chronicle
Can low GI food reduce the risk of diabetes? Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy April 22, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Non Communicable Disease, Diabetes, Nutrition, Research Findings Dr. Vishwanath Mohan , founder of the M adras D iabetes R esearch F oundation, was one of the researchers in this study. The PURE study comprised a prospective cohort of 12594 citizens worldwide, a representative sample from 20 low, middle, and high-income countries . This study aimed to determine the association between glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) in an international setting with varying diets across the globe and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Diet was assessed, GI estimated, and participants grouped as per quintiles of GI and GL after which the cohort was followed up for 9-13 years. Nearly 6% (7326) of participants developed T2DM. It was observed that those in higher quantiles of GI and GL had a higher risk of developing T2DM. The study results suggest that consuming low-GI foods can prevent the onset of T2DM. Surveying COTPA violations: A statewide analysis of Indian schools and tobacco retailers Content Editor: Dr. Tanya May 10, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Tobacco Addiction, COTPA, Adolescent Health To determine the number of violations and the correlation between the schools with COTPA violations and characteristics such as gender, size, category, and location of schools, a study surveyed four Indian states. These included: Andhra Pradesh (AP) Karnataka (KA) Meghalaya (ML) Uttar Pradesh (UP) 289,392 schools were asked to record the number of tobacco-selling establishments within a hundred yards of them, on an app distributed to all schools in these states. Out of the 61,748 (21.3%) schools that responded, 16,193 (26.2% ) reported the presence of such establishments within a hundred-yard area of them. State-by-state, the percentage of non-compliance with the COTPA rules reported was 22.2%, 17.5%, 42.9%, and 31.4% for AP, KA, ML, and UP, respectively. There was a strong correlation between the states of KA and ML using chi-square tests (p-value <0.001) regarding characteristics such as school location, size, and category. This study indicates that the higher the prevalence of tobacco users in the state, the higher the percentage of schools with tobacco shops (Section 6b violations). As per the findings, all these schools violating the rules should be tracked down, and necessary actions should be taken. Click here to read more. Previous Next

WHO releases the fifth global status report on road safety Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy December 28, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Global health, Road safety, Injuries & Accidents, WHO report; Social determinants of health Road traffic accidents continue to be the major cause of death among children and young adults aged 5 to 29. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists account for more than half of all deaths, particularly in poor and middle-income nations. The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 , published this month presents a review of progress from 2010 to 2021. It establishes the foundation for the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 goal of lowering road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030. This report reveals that the number of road traffic deaths has decreased marginally to 1.19 million per year, indicating that measures to improve road safety are having an effect. However, the cost of mobility remains much too high, and immediate action is required if the objective of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030 is to be met. Previous Next
