Dr. Vishwanath Mohan, founder of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, was one of the researchers in this study.
The PURE study comprised a prospective cohort of 12594 citizens worldwide, a representative sample from 20 low, middle, and high-income countries.
This study aimed to determine the association between glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) in an international setting with varying diets across the globe and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Diet was assessed, GI estimated, and participants grouped as per quintiles of GI and GL after which the cohort was followed up for 9-13 years.
Nearly 6% (7326) of participants developed T2DM.
It was observed that those in higher quantiles of GI and GL had a higher risk of developing T2DM.
The study results suggest that consuming low-GI foods can prevent the onset of T2DM.
