Sexual and Reproductive health: From science to policy Sexual and Reproductive health: From science to policy Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti August 29, 2023 WHO News Section Sexual and Reproductive Health, Human Rights The World Health Organization (WHO), Human Reproduction Program (HRP), and the European Parliamentary Forum (EPF) for Sexual and Reproductive Rights agreed upon improving policies aligned with sexual and reproductive health. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU ) was signed for the same. WHO and HRP, in partnership with EPF, acknowledge the significance of parliamentarians in: Strengthening the existing policies Improving the aspects of legislation, advocacy, and accountability. The areas to be addressed are: Technical support Advocacy Capacity building This will help to promote and protect evidence-based rules and regulations And also aid to create awareness about sexual and reproductive health.

Online survey reveals stark details about perception of workplace safety by doctors Online survey reveals stark details about perception of workplace safety by doctors Content Editor: Dr Manu November 21, 2024 Kerala Medical Journal Workplace Safety, Violence Against Doctors, Indian Medical Association The results from an online survey carried out by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on the perception of safety and experience of workplace violence against doctors , specially during night shifts, was released in the Kerala Medical Journal. Following were the findings - 3885 doctors sent their responses, with a majority of the respondents being junior doctors (Interns or Postgraduate trainees) (61%) and women (63%). Almost 71% of respondents were 30 years old or younger . Almost half (45%) of respondents did not have access to a duty room at night while a third of those with access to a duty room, didn’t have an attached washroom (31%) . Meanwhile, 63% of respondents had a duty room far (100-1000 metres) to very far (>1000 metres) from their ward. 35% of respondents reported feeling unsafe (0-3) or very unsafe (0) during night duties while rating safety on a numeric rating scale of 0-10. The results also showed respondents felt more unsafe when they didn’t have access to a duty room at night compared to those who had. While respondents with an attached washroom felt safer compared to those who didn’t have one in their duty room. Respondents in government hospitals and junior doctors felt more unsafe compared to those in private hospitals or senior doctors respectively. The Poshan Tracker is making a difference through via various measures: : The Poshan Tracker utilizes Growth Measuring Devices (GMD) at Anganwadi Centers to collect accurate data on children's growth. This data is then entered into the system, allowing for real-time monitoring of each child's progress. Early identification: By comparing children's growth data with WHO standards, the Tracker identifies potential nutritional issues early on, enabling targeted interventions. Pandemic-Related Mortality Trends Among Adults in California, 2016–2023 Content Editor : Dr. Sudeep August 30, 2025 at 2:59:09 PM COVID-19, immigrants, vulnerable population, Access to healthcare Researchers examined death certificates for all California residents ≥ 25 years who died from natural causes during 2016-2023. Comparing pre-pandemic mortality and the difference in outcomes during pandemic years (and accounting for seasonal variation), the team modelled absolute and relative excess mortalities. Researchers then found a 55% increase in death rate for undocumented immigrants above pre-pandemic level, which was observed to be 22% for documented immigrants and only 12% for US-born citizens. For instance, essential workers of Latino descent (undocumented) had a surprising 91% increase in deaths as compared to US-born white citizens (8%). This study highlights the growing disparity in access to basic healthcare, segregated along ethnic lines in the United States, and the need to protect these vulnerable sections before the next pandemic hits. A Leap to Clean India A Leap to Clean India Content Editor: Akhila Nandan August 23, 2023 Twitter Public health laws and regulations, Sanitation, WASH Swach Bharath Mission, launched on October 2014, plays a pivotal role in ‘dusting up’ India. It also aims to make India ‘Open Defecation Free’. It mainly pushes ODF sustainability and Solid Liquid Waste Management , which is being worked currently under phase 2 of SBM-Grameen campaign. Of all the states, Telangana bagged the first place in achieving 100% ODF villages (12,769 villages- Solid waste management and 11,998 villages- Liquid waste management). Telangana has also revolutionised this campaign by constructing Latrines (over 31.20 lakhs) Waste collection and Segregation sheds (almost 14,927) Community Sanitary Complexes ( over 6588)
