Canine wonders : Dogs can detect people with COVID 19 in seconds Canine wonders : Dogs can detect people with COVID 19 in seconds Content Editor: Dr. Anubhav Mondal May 28, 2023 CIDRAP COVID 19, sensitivity, specificity, screening, early detection Early in 2020 , before diagnostic tools were widely accessible, the idea of using dogs to detect COVID-19 surfaced. Since then, more than 70 groups in 60 countries have conducted research to determine how and whether canines may be used to detect those with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Dogs were evaluated for their capacity to recognize COVID-19 from sweat samples, saliva, masks, and urine in the 27 studies that made up this analysis. Sensitivity and specificity ranges in six trials with high-quality data were 82% to 97% and 83% to 100%, respectively. Rapid antigen testing should have minimum standards that are higher than 80% sensitivity and 97% specificity. According to the systematic review done, most SARS-CoV-2 canine smell detection is within or even above these requirements. Dogs have been thus utilized in real-time population screening scenarios , such as airports and large gatherings because they can detect scent in seconds.

E-cigarettes: not a smoking cessation strategy! Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami January 8, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Global Health, WHO E-cigarettes are allowed on the open market and aggressively marketed to young people. 88 countries have set no minimum age requirement to buy them and 74 have no regulations at all. E-cigarettes with nicotine are highly addictive and harmful to health. They target children through social media influencers, with more than 16,000 flavors, sleek designs, and popular cartoon characters. Children 13-15 years old are using them at rates higher than adults in all WHO regions . In the UK and Canada, the rates of use in young users are doubled in comparison to adult users. Even brief exposure to e-cigarette content increases interest in these products. E-cigarette users are 3 times more likely to use cigarettes later in life. They are not recommended as a cessation strategy based on the best available evidence of efficacy, even under a controlled environment. WHO recommends strengthening the implementation of bans and surveillance in the 34 countries where they are banned. WHO also recommends strong regulations to reduce their appeal by: Banning flavors Limiting nicotine concentration Taxing them in those countries where they are legal Previous Next
