  • Smartphone-based sensor aims to revolutionize Parkinson’s disease management | PH Chronicle

Smartphone-based sensor aims to revolutionize Parkinson’s disease management Content Editor: Dr. Prachi September 6, 2024 at 3:30:00 PM Innovation, Technology Parkinson's disease is caused by decreased dopamine levels, which can be managed by administering the right amount of L-dopa medication. However, too much or too little L-dopa can cause serious side effects or a return of Parkinson's symptoms. Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) have developed an affordable, portable, smartphone-based sensor that can accurately detect L-dopa levels in the body. The sensor measures color changes using a 365nm LED and smartphone camera, allowing patients to monitor their L-dopa levels and adjust medication as needed. The sensor is made by coating a silk-fibroin protein nanolayer over reduced graphene oxide nanoparticles. These nanoparticles have photoluminescence properties that can detect L-dopa levels in blood, urine, and sweat. This simple, cost-effective tool could help Parkinson's patients in remote areas manage their condition more effectively. Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • Air pollution in India claiming millions of life: Karolinska Institutet Study

Air pollution in India claiming millions of life: Karolinska Institutet Study Air pollution in India claiming millions of life: Karolinska Institutet Study Content Editor: Dr Tanya January 2, 2025 The Lancet Planetary Health Air Pollution, PM2.5, Respiratory Diseases Air pollution in India, particularly from particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) , poses a significant health threat as these particles can enter the lungs and bloodstream. A recent study has explored the correlation between PM2.5 levels and mortality over a decade, utilizing data from 655 districts across India from 2009 to 2019. The study findings include: An increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter in PM2.5 concentration is associated with an 8.6% rise in mortality rates. Approximately 3.8 million deaths during this period can be attributed to PM2.5 levels exceeding India's air quality standards of 40 micrograms per cubic meter. The estimated deaths jumped to 16.6 million, accounting for nearly 25% of total mortality in the study timeframe when compared to the stricter World Health Organization (WHO) guideline of 5 micrograms per cubic meter. The research underscores that nearly all India's population lives in areas where PM2.5 concentrations surpass WHO recommendations, exposing about 1.4 billion individuals annually to harmful air pollution. Some regions recorded levels as high as 119 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding both Indian and WHO safety thresholds. Hence, implementing stricter regulations and measures to curb emissions is crucial. Click here to read more.

  • Enhancing folate levels: The impact of fortified salt on women's health in rural India | PH Chronicle

Enhancing folate levels: The impact of fortified salt on women's health in rural India Content Editor: Dr. Anamika July 9, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Fortified salt, Maternal nutrition, Women’s health, Nutrition A nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted in four rural villages in southern India from July to November 2022. Nonpregnant, nonlactating women aged 18-45 years were enrolled and participants consumed the study salt (folate-fortified iodized) exclusively , and serum folate concentrations were measured at baseline and post-intervention. The results of the study are as follows: Serum folate levels increased significantly post-intervention (median: 14.6 nmol/L to 54.4 nmol/L, P < .001). Over 90% of participants experienced higher folate levels. Study salt remained stable for eight months , maintaining iodine and folate content. The study showed a 3.7-fold increase in serum folate with 300 µg folic acid daily from fortified iodized salt. Folic acid fortification of iodized salt can prevent spina bifida and anencephaly by improving folate levels. Some of the strengths of this study were that it was conducted in remote villages that had minimal external influences and that there was a high adherence and participant retention. Few of the limitations of the study included a small sample size and a lack of control group. Also, the study tested a single dose formulation of folic acid without exploring other various concentrations. The authors concluded that f olic acid–fortified iodised salt presents a viable strategy for enhancing folate levels and preventing neural tube defects in high-risk populations.
