  • Malawi roars for change: Demands action ahead of COP 28 summit | PH Chronicle

Malawi roars for change: Demands action ahead of COP 28 summit Content Editor: Dr. Anubhav Mondal December 20, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Climate change, Environment Geopolitics and foreign events have already had an impact on Malawi in recent years. Cyclone Freddy killed hundreds of people and displaced over 650,000 in the country. It also influenced Malawi's agriculture industry , which accounts for roughly 30% of the country's GDP and 80% of national export profits. The Ukrainian war has already had a significant impact on the economy, as its agricultural industry relies on fertilizer imports, which is one item harmed by the conflict. Nancy Tembo, Malawi's Foreign Affairs Minister noted that one approach to further support nations like Malawi at the climate conference will be the realisation of the long-awaited loss and damage fund , a financial mechanism to ameliorate climate emergencies established at COP 27 but currently lacking in execution. She is also asking for assistance in gaining a greater understanding and clarity on the carbon market , a trading system in which carbon credits are sold and bought to recompense firms or individuals for their greenhouse gas emissions. Malawi is likewise promoting debt forgiveness through a debt-for-nature concept . Debt-for-nature swaps are financial arrangements that allow for the forgiveness of portions of a developing country's foreign debt in exchange for commitments to spend in biodiversity conservation and environmental policy measures. • Telangana's 2024 Gig Workers Policy: Comprehensive social welfare scheme for a diverse workforce | PH Chronicle

Telangana's 2024 Gig Workers Policy: Comprehensive social welfare scheme for a diverse workforce Content Editor: Dr. Mohammed Kashif June 9, 2024 at 1:49:46 PM Social security, Labour rights, Gig workers Amidst the evolving gig economy, the Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers Policy, 2024 , emerges as a comprehensive framework safeguarding the felt needs of workers across multiple sectors. Forum for Good Governance, an NGO, along with the state Labour Department, has developed the policy. The draft Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers Policy, 2024, proposes: Minimum wages for gig workers. Accidental insurance of Rs 5 lakh. Mandatory health coverage. Contributions from aggregator companies to a welfare fund managed by a board. Contributory old age pension. Contributory wage compensation scheme. Scholarships for workers' children. Maternity benefits. The policy requires aggregators to establish dispute resolution committees and mandates worker registration with the government. Ride-sharing platforms and food delivery aggregators need to register with the Transport and Labour Departments, respectively. The key issue of severance pay in this sector is overlooked, as companies view their workers as partners and not employees. The policy extends coverage to workers in sectors beyond ride-sharing and food delivery, including logistics, healthcare and hospitality. Previous Next

Which is superior- Covishield or Covaxin? Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy March 25, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Healthcare Research, COVID, Vaccines, Covishield, Public Health A non-randomized, single-blinded (laboratory) study was conducted among the healthy general population across four sites (Bangalore & Pune) between June 2021 and Jan 2022. No sample size was determined. Recruited participants were grouped into two groups based on serostatus [positivity/negativity] at baseline. The clinical sites integrated unbiased enrollment with pre-screening for anti-spike antibodies to ensure equitable recruitment within each serostatus. Seroconversion rates due to Covaxin after the first and second vaccination doses were 36.6% and 74.4%, respectively. Whereas Covishield resulted in 93.2% and 98.3% seroconversion in the baseline seronegative population . Hence Covishield was proved superior to Covaxin , as interpreted from both: Seroconversion rate and Anti-spike antibody levels in both groups of participants. Previous Next
