Thirty-eighth meeting of the IHR emergency committee for Polio Thirty-eighth meeting of the IHR emergency committee for Polio Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar April 25, 2024 WHO News Section International health, Disease outbreak, Polio, Public health In the context of the global target of interruption and certification of wild poliovirus (WPV1) eradication by 2026, interruption and certification of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV2) elimination by 2028 , the Emergency Committee reviewed the data. In 2024, the Baluchistan province of Pakistan reported 2 new cases of WPV1 It indicates the spread of WPV1 from the endemic zone of Afghanistan to traditional reservoirs of Pakistan. An intensive and synchronized campaign schedule focusing on improved vaccination coverage in endemic zones of both Afghanistan and Pakistan is in implementation. The return of undocumented migrants from Pakistan to Afghanistan has attenuated the challenges, which are being managed and mitigated by vaccinating at border crossing points and updating microplans in districts of both countries. The meeting concluded that the risk of international spread of poliovirus still remains a public health emergency of international concern and the tempory recommendation should be extended further for 3 more months. Transforming Mental Health: Initiatives and Progress in India Content Editor: Dr. Sumana Mukhopadhyay August 25, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Mental Health Under NMHP -Outpatient services, assessment, counseling/ psycho-social interventions and support for people with severe mental disorders, and other services are available through the DMHP at the CHC and PHC levels. The tertiary care component of the NMHP has sanctioned 25 COEs to boost the admission of students in PG departments and has helped 19 government medical colleges strengthen 47 postgraduate departments in mental health specializations. Efforts are being taken to make resources available in vulnerable areas by providing training to healthcare personnel Additionally, mental health treatments have been included in the Comprehensive Primary Health Care package under the Ayushman Bharat - HWC Scheme. The government has begun a "National Tele Mental Health Program" to expand access to excellent mental health counseling from October 2022. 42 Tele MANAS Cells have been established by Aug 2023 and are providing tele-mental health services having received almost 1,94,000 calls. Botulism scare in Moscow: Authorities intervene to prevent further illness Botulism scare in Moscow: Authorities intervene to prevent further illness Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 27, 2024 Social Trends Botulism, Outbreak, Food Safety A suspected outbreak of botulism food poisoning affected Moscow as 121 people reported symptoms of the same, with 55 in serious condition and 30 requiring intensive care. Early intervention by antitoxin treatment ensured that, though serious, people’s lives were not in danger, as assured by the authorities. The outbreak is suspected to have been caused by tainted salads supplied by an online food delivery company. The Moscow prosecutor’s office halted operations and opened a criminal investigation against the company. Rospotrebnadzor, the city’s consumer watchdog, has conducted an epidemiological investigation since the first case was reported. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating how the neurotoxin entered the food chain and identifying other compromised food products. Telangana DCA cancels licenses of six Hyderabad wholesalers for illegal insulin trade Telangana DCA cancels licenses of six Hyderabad wholesalers for illegal insulin trade Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 3, 2024 Social Trends Drugs, Illegal Drug Trade, Drugs and Cosmetics Act The Telangana Drug Control Administration (DCA) has taken a decisive step by canceling the licenses of not one, not two, but six wholesale dealers in Hyderabad. These dealers were found to be involved in the illegal procurement and sale of insulin injections, a shocking discovery made during raids carried out from March 15-20. Stocks worth a staggering 51.92 lakhs were also seized, underscoring the magnitude of this illegal activity. These injections were procured from New Delhi without purchase bills and sold by wholesalers at 40% or more discounts. This act violates the Drug and Cosmetics Act of 1940, as procuring drugs without purchase is deemed fraudulent, as the quality, authenticity, and safety of the medicines can’t be verified. Further, a lack of purchase bills is deemed tax evasion as accurate revenue reporting with the purchase and sale of medicines is also not available.

By 2050, global life expectancy to increase by nearly 5 years Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar May 31, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM International health, Research findings Study indicates that due to the shift in the burden of Non-communicable diseases(NCDs) and from years of life lost (YLL) to years lived with disability (YLDs), more people are expected to live longer with but with poor health. Global life expectancy is expected to increase from 73.6 years in 2022 to 78.1 years by 2050. And, Global Healthy Life Expectancy will increase from 64.8 to 67.4 in 2050. In addition to these studies, the GBD 2021 risk factor study found that the total number of years lost due to poor health and early death(DALY) attributable to metabolic risk factors had increased by 50% since 2000. Globally, effects are strongest for ‘Improved Behavioral and Metabolic Risks’ with a 13.3% reduction in disease burden in 2050. And also, ‘safer environment’ and ‘Improved Childhood Nutrition and vaccination’ scenario too showed reductions in disease burden. The study concludes that there is an emergent opportunity to influence global health by reducing and eliminating the various metabolic and dietary risk factors. Previous Next
