Criticism mounts as NMC alters logo featuring 'Dhanvantari' Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy December 6, 2023 at 3:32:03 PM NMC, Medical Education Board The Union Health Ministry recently directed the Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres to be renamed 'Ayushman Arogya Mandir' with the motto 'Arogyam Parmam Dhanam' (health is the greatest wealth). Following this there is news the National Medical Commission (NMC) joined the revamping drive this week by changing its logo to include a color picture of 'Dhanvantari' and the term 'Bharat' above it. The doctor's community and the majority of public have criticized the needless move, senior officials at NMC maintain that the only change that has happened is that the black and white logo is now colored. The Indian Medical Association, Kerala chapter has stressed that Dhanvantari is a god of Hindu religion and so should not endorse it and have a secular symbol for health. Previous Next

Gender Equality- The Key To Harmony : Government can achieve through legislation Gender Equality- The Key To Harmony : Government can achieve through legislation Content Editor: Dr. Akhila Nandan June 26, 2023 United Nations Gender Equality, Domestic abuse, UNDP, Social determinants of health "Social norms that impair women's rights are detrimental to society more broadly, dampening the expansion of human development " said Pedro Conceição, head of UNDP's Human Development Report Office. 25% of people justify domestic abuse , because of hate campaigns and movements against gender equality. On an average, the share of women as heads of State or heads of government has remained around 10 per cent since 1995, less than 1/3 of managerial positions are held by women and there exists an income gap of about 39% among both genders. The UNDP reports that governments can achieve this dream of gender equality by shifting gender social norms, from adopting parental leave policies, that have changed perceptions around care work responsibilities, to labour market reforms that have led to a change in beliefs around women in the workforce. A reformation could be implemented by investing in laws to promote gender equality in the field of politics, occupation, and households. The issues of cyberbullying , online hate campaigns misinterpreting feminism and gender stereotyping , if tackled ardently by the government with the people’s support, this society will definitely be a utopia to live in harmony.

The report indicates that there have been 97,745 confirmed cases and 203 deaths across 116 countries worldwide, with South Africa experiencing a severe outbreak with a high case fatality rate. UN General Assembly Focuses Towards Elimination Of Sexual Violence In Conflict Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad July 12, 2023 at 12:35:20 AM International Day, Sexual Violence, War, Addressal of sexual assault Amid growing political and security challenges, sexual violence remains a tool of terrorism, torture, and war. Hate speech and sexual assault both online and offline, undermine women's and girls' participation in society and are a threat to democracy. "Conflict-related sexual violence " encompasses rape, sexual slavery, trafficking, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, forced sterilization, forced marriage, and any other type of sexual violence that is directly or indirectly related to a conflict. Estimates state that for every conflict-related rape that is reported but 10–20 go unreported due to survivors' fear and cultural stigma. In 2015, the UN General Assembly declared June 19 "The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict to honour victims and survivors" , raise awareness and pay respects to those who have sacrificed their lives to fight against sexual harassment. In 2016, the Security Council recognized sexual assault as a terrorist strategy and declared that the victims of trafficking or sexual assault by terrorist organizations should be entitled to official redressal as victims of terrorism. Strong Social Ties Promote Longevity and Better Health Outcomes Content Editor: Dr. Sampriti July 11, 2025 at 5:03:46 PM International Health News A recent report from a WHO Commission emphasizes the importance of strong social ties for maintaining good health , warning that loneliness and social isolation are significant global health threats. It is estimated that loneliness contributes to 871,000 additional deaths each year across 100 countries, with risks akin to smoking 15 cigarettes daily . Social isolation increases the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, dementia, anxiety, and depression. The Commission urges immediate, multi-sectoral efforts, such as enhancing community infrastructure, formulating supportive policies and incorporating social connection into healthcare systems. The report from the WHO Commission on Social Connection presents a worldwide action plan that concentrates on five main areas: policy, research, interventions, improved measurement (including the creation of a global Social Connection Index) and public engagement . The aim is to transform social norms and strengthen a global movement for social connection . Additionally, WHO introduced the “Knot Alone” campaign and passed its first World Health Assembly resolution on social connection in June 2025, urging nations to prioritize this issue. Tackling social isolation is crucial for enhancing population health and reducing premature mortality worldwide. Previous Next
