Menstrual Health Study Highlights Stigma Among Youth in Tamil Nadu Content Editor: Dr. Manu Goel July 11, 2025 at 5:03:46 PM Menstruation, Women And Child Health, Adolescent Health American Institutes for Research (AIR) and Sanitation First , two non-profit organisations, had collaborated to conduct a baseline-level survey in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu exploring the stigma surrounding menstruation and the barriers girls face towards meeting their needs. The following are the findings - 43% of boys believed that girls shouldn’t enter the kitchen while 58% believed they shouldn’t enter religious places during menstruation. 77% of girls shared this belief . 70% of boys and 30% of girls believed that menstruation was disabling for girls . This reflected an undercurrent of stigma towards menstruation. 15% of girls had missed school due to heavy and painful menstrual bleeding. This showed the significant burden of an oft-ignored issue. Meanwhile, 95% of teachers and school leaders believed that mothers should be the primary source of information about menstruation for girls. A majority of girls also followed unsafe practices related to the disposal of sanitary products . 72% of women burnt the sanitary products while 3% of them buried it. Following the findings of this study, Sanitation First plans to conduct the ‘Happy Period s' training programme across 62 schools in the district. These will be compared with other groups acting as a control in the district. An endline survey will then be conducted to assess the impact of this project. Happy Periods is a program conducted independently in Tamil Nadu to create awareness among adolescents and teachers regarding menstruation.Click here to read more Previous Next

Systematic review uncovers real-world effectiveness of MVA-BN vaccine in outbreak settings Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy May 13, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Vaccine, Monkey Pox, Outbreak Mpox, predominantly found in Central and West Africa, has recently led to significant outbreaks in non-endemic areas , including a major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) vaccine , approved for mpox and smallpox, has been evaluated for its effectiveness through a systematic review of observational studies published from January 2022 to February 2024 . This review, which included 16 studies from high-income countries with varied designs and target populations, found that MVA-BN offers vaccine effectiveness (VE) against symptomatic mpox ranging from 35% to 86% after one dose and 66% to 90% after two doses in pre-exposure settings. For post-exposure prophylaxis, VE was observed at 78% and 89% for a single dose. Additionally, MVA-BN has been shown to reduce hospitalization risks and severity of symptoms, supporting its use in managing mpox outbreaks despite the studies' methodological diversity. - Sikkim's bid to boost fertility rate | PH Chronicle
Sikkim's bid to boost fertility rate January 25, 2023 at 5:24:40 AM Demography Among the states, Sikkim has the lowest population at just over 6.8 lakh. According to NFHS-5 data, Sikkim has the lowest total fertility rate (TFR) in the country. The figure stood at 1.1 for 2022. The TFR was 0.7 in urban areas and 1.3 in rural areas – both below the national average of 2.0, and the replacement level of 2.1. Alarmed by the state’s falling fertility rate, the Sikkim government has introduced a slew of incentives. •Women government employees to get free childcare attendants to take care of their new-borns for a year. •365 days maternity leave and 30 days paternity leave. •Financial help for IVF procedure. •Salary increments for government employees who opt for more than one child. How is surface temperature associated with Dengue outbreaks? Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala May 14, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Dengue, Communicable Disease, Climate Change, Research Findings Dengue is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases and a global health threat that has spread worldwide rapidly in recent years. A study published in the Science journal used the data of dengue incidences across the world from 1990-2019 and investigated the climate factors related to its causation. Researchers used an Empirical Dynamic Modelling technique (EDM), and convergent cross-mapping (CCM) to establish causality. The results of the study showed that the regional average anomalies in the surface temperature of the Indian Ocean (IOBW index) were moderately correlated with yearly dengue incidence in the Northern (r = 0.53) and Southern (r = 0.57) hemispheres. They established temporal association on causality using the CCM technique. Local temperature was found to be teleconnected with the IOBW index, hence, influencing dengue transmission patterns. The causality needs further confirmation using longitudinal studies, as it was deduced statistically. However, the IOBW index could not explain inter-country variability. Further research in the field is encouraged to incorporate other potential factors to frame dengue early warning systems. Click here to read more. Previous Next

WHO report highlights updates in addressing the neglected tropical diseases Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay May 15, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Neglected tropical diseases, International health news, World Health Assembly The World Health Organization (WHO) reported progress toward neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in 2023. This report is being presented at the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA77). The key takeaways: While the number of people needing NTD interventions has decreased since 2010 (26% decrease), it's not enough to meet the 2030 target of a 90% reduction. Five countries were acknowledged by WHO for eliminating one NTD, and one country for eliminating two NTDs in 2023. By December 2023, 50 countries had successfully eliminated at least one NTD, halfway towards the 2030 target. The treatment numbers went down slightly in 2022 compared to 2021. Also, deaths from vector-borne NTDs have increased by 22% since 2016. NTD medicine donations reached a new high in 2023. This report provides a detailed overview of progress on all the NTD road map indicators. Click here to read more. Previous Next
