  • The World Health Organization (WHO) reported progress toward neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in 2023.

  • This report is being presented at the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA77).

  • The key takeaways:

  1. While the number of people needing NTD interventions has decreased since 2010 (26% decrease), it's not enough to meet the 2030 target of a 90% reduction.

  2. Five countries were acknowledged by WHO for eliminating one NTD, and one country for eliminating two NTDs in 2023.

  3. By December 2023, 50 countries had successfully eliminated at least one NTD, halfway towards the 2030 target.

  4. The treatment numbers went down slightly in 2022 compared to 2021.

  5. Also, deaths from vector-borne NTDs have increased by 22%  since 2016.

  6. NTD medicine donations reached a new high in 2023.

  • This report provides a detailed overview of progress on all the NTD road map indicators.
