Air awareness inequalities Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi April 15, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM Air Pollution, AQI, Environmental Health For the “SAAF SAANS” survey, conducted by the NGO Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, a population of 500 people was divided into two groups: Residents of informal settlements and slums Formal middle-class settlements In contrast to middle-class settlements, where 71% of residents were aware of terms like AQI and PM 2.5, which pose a health risk, only 10% of urban poor people were aware of the same. The results of the study also showed that automobiles were cited as the primary source of air pollution (33%) by urban poor respondents, followed by construction activities (27%), and stubble burning (20%). While respondents from the middle class employed air purifiers and indoor plants to lessen their exposure to air pollution, the urban poor relied on face masks and increased water consumption. • Impact of the Texas abortion ban law 2021: Increase in infant deaths | PH Chronicle

Impact of the Texas abortion ban law 2021: Increase in infant deaths Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar July 17, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Reproductive and sexual health, Infant mortality, Public laws, Abortion Texas law prohibiting abortion if heartbeat is detected came into effect from September 1, 2021. It didn’t allow exemptions for congenital anomalies, either. A new study by Johns Hopkins researchers is the first study that examines how Texas abortion bans have impacted infant deaths in the state and also the first to present evidence evaluating recent abortion bans and pre-viability restrictions. There was a 12.7% increase above the expected 1,697 infant deaths for this period, as 1913 deaths were observed. It found a similar pattern in neonatal deaths, with an estimated 145 excess deaths in the post-policy period, which were not observed in other states. Researchers also found that Texas had an atypical increase in infant deaths due to congenital anomalies. As per the records, infant deaths attributed to congenital anomalies increased by 22.9% in Texas between 2021 and 2022, whereas the rest of the U.S. had a decrease of 3.1% during the same period. 01.What are the SARS-CoV-2 lineages circulating in China? December 26, 2022 at 6:27:11 PM COVID-19, Omicron Over the course of the pandemic, genome sequencing of the virus and rapid sharing of data has been key to tracking the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and early identification of emerging variants. SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data previously submitted from China to GISAID, a globally accessible repository of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences, shows that over the months, the country has seen isolated cases linked to multiple variants of the virus seen previously. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has added another category of variants referred to as ‘Omicron subvariants under monitoring’.Currently, the Omicron subvariants being monitored under this category include BA.2.75, BA.4.6, XBB, BA.2.3.20 and sublineages of BA.5 including BF.7 and BQ.1. While the first sample belonging to lineage BA.4.6 dates back to December 2021, lineage BA.2.3.20 was detected in multiple countries recently in August 2022. Previous Next

  • Effect of mother's employment on the child's nutritional status | PH Chronicle

Effect of mother's employment on the child's nutritional status Content Editor: Sivanthiga.G July 29, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Maternal and Child health, Nutrition, Employment In 2018, the Ecuadorian National Statistical Office reported the prevalence of malnutrition in under-5 children to be 23%. To explore the potential trade-off between maternal employment and child malnutrition in Mexico and to provide policy recommendations, an observational study titled ‘Maternal employment and child malnutrition in Ecuador’ was conducted. This cross-sectional study used data from two national surveys, the ECV (Living Conditions Survey) 2014 and the ENSANUT (National Health and Nutrition Survey) 2018. The findings of the study were: Maternal employment is significantly associated with stunting in under-five children; i.e., children born to working mothers were 4.2 to 18.1% more likely to develop stunting when compared to unemployed mothers . However, Maternal employment wasn't associated with other forms of malnutrition. Income inequality, poverty, poor health status, and inadequate dwelling features were other factors leading to child malnutrition. The effect of maternal employment on child malnutrition was found to be heterogeneous across various population subgroups, with the greatest impact observed among poor and rural households. As a result, policies should offer sufficient support for childcare activities. This study emphasized that a working mother's potential income increase cannot compensate for the time lost. However, the study had some limitations, so care must be taken when interpreting the findings. Click here to read more Previous Next

  • CBSE Directs Schools to Set Up "Sugar Boards" to Combat Rising Diabetes in Children | PH Chronicle

CBSE Directs Schools to Set Up "Sugar Boards" to Combat Rising Diabetes in Children Content Editor: Dr. Asma Aftab May 28, 2025 at 3:37:37 PM NCD, Childhood Diabetes, Nutrition The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE ) has instructed its affiliated schools to set up “sugar boards ” aimed at monitoring and reducing sugar consumption among students. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns of increased incidence of Type 2 diabetes in children , a condition once largely seen in adults. CBSE has linked this trend to the widespread availability of sugary snacks, beverages, and processed foods in schools, which also contribute to rise in obesity, dental issues, and declining academic performance. The sugar boards will feature important information such as recommended daily sugar intake , sugar level in commonly used foods , health risks associated with high sugar consumption , and suggest healthier food alternatives . Additionally, schools have also been directed to organize awareness seminars and workshops , and to submit a brief report along with photographs by July 15. This initiative aligns with recommendation from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR ) to foster healthier food environments within schools. Previous Next
