Texas law prohibiting abortion if heartbeat is detected came into effect from September 1, 2021.
It didn’t allow exemptions for congenital anomalies, either.
A new study by Johns Hopkins researchers is the first study that examines how Texas abortion bans have impacted infant deaths in the state and also the first to present evidence evaluating recent abortion bans and pre-viability restrictions.
There was a 12.7% increase above the expected 1,697 infant deaths for this period, as 1913 deaths were observed.
It found a similar pattern in neonatal deaths, with an estimated 145 excess deaths in the post-policy period, which were not observed in other states.
Researchers also found that Texas had an atypical increase in infant deaths due to congenital anomalies.
As per the records, infant deaths attributed to congenital anomalies increased by 22.9% in Texas between 2021 and 2022, whereas the rest of the U.S. had a decrease of 3.1% during the same period.
