Pune Battles a Surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases Content Editor: Dr. Mohammed Kasif January 31, 2025 at 3:17:36 PM Disease outbreak, Auto-immune disorder, Surveillance The Pune Municipal Corporation, the Pimpri-Chinchiwad Municipal Corporation , and a few adjoining districts of Pune , Maharashtra, have reported about 127 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS ), with two suspected deaths and 20 patients on ventilators as of 30 January 2025. GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and paralysis. Though its exact cause is unclear, it often follows viral or bacterial infections . The condition is more common in adults and males , with an incidence of 1–2 per 100,000 population. With cases rising, strengthened surveillance , early detection , and public awareness are crucial in managing the outbreak of GBS. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has deployed a team to assess the outbreak, while local health officials have surveyed over 25,500 households in affected areas. Postmortem and microbiological tests are being conducted to confirm the cause of death. Following this, local authorities have sent samples to the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV ) for further analysis. Previous Next

US FDA approves “Teal Wand,” A Self-Sampling Kit for Cervical Cancer Screening at Home Content Editor: Dr. Harshita May 28, 2025 at 3:37:29 PM Cancer, screening tool, FDA In May 2024, a self-sampling kit named Teal Wand for cervical cancer screening was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA ). The kit enables women to collect cervical samples at home, which can be sent to a lab for testing. The kit has a 96% accuracy rate , which is comparable to a clinical test. It promises multiple advantages over conventional Pap smear and liquid-based cytology. Less painful Self-sampling can improve screening coverage Convenient, comfortable, and easy to use The device, which is a tube encasing a cytobrush with a piston, can be inserted via the vagina to the cervix to collect a sample. The kit also contains an instruction manual and a biohazard bag for keeping the sample. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that 70% of women undergo cervical cancer screening at least twice in their lifetime , but data shows two out of three women have never been screened at all. In LMICs like India, self-sampling kits might prove useful with strategic planning and generating awareness, especially among rural women. A similar kit by the name of Cervicheck (Pragmatech Healthcare Solutions) has been piloted in India, which showed similar accuracy. Previous Next

Telangana: The best state for organ donation and transplantation Content Editor: Dr Swathi Shenoy August 9, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Organ donation, Transplantation, Public health On the 14th National Organ Day 2024, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW) awarded Telangana State the title of best state for organ donation and transplantation. In 2023, the state's donation rate reached 5.48 per million population (pmp) , surpassing India's average donation rate of 0.8 pmp by a substantial margin. The Jeevandan Cadaver Transplantation Programme , started by the Telangana state Government in 2013, contributed significantly to this accomplishment. Since its establishment in January 2013, Jeevandan has enabled the collection of 5,541 organs and tissues from 1,465 deceased donors. Also, Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad, was recognized as the best private hospital with the highest cadaver donation. As of July 2024, there are 40 recognized facilities in Telangana that are authorized to perform cadaver transplants. Every transplantation has the potential to save up to 8 lives, underscoring the urgency to enhance the nation's capability for cadaver transplantations. Previous Next

- Cancer outcomes and the Y chromosome | PH Chronicle
Cancer outcomes and the Y chromosome Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad July 23, 2023 at 5:39:07 AM Cancer, Genetics, Research According to various studies, the role of Y chromosome might be important in determining cancer outcomes. The results of two such studies have been published in the ‘Nature’ journal. In one study, Ronald DePinho and colleagues from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, used a mouse model to investigate sex disparities in colorectal cancer that involved the KRAS oncogene. Similar to human findings, male mice had worse survival rates and more metastases. A gene on the Y chromosome that promotes cancer invasion and immune evasion is overexpressed, according to analysis. The second study by Dan Theodorescu and colleagues from Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles, studied 300 male bladder cancer patients to determine how loss of Y chromosome would alter cancer outcomes. Tumours without the Y chromosome were more aggressive and had a muted T cell-mediated immune response. Y chromosome loss was found to be related with an improved response to anti-PD1 checkpoint blockade therapy in both mice and humans, suggesting a potential course of treatment for this subset of bladder malignancies. - Can yogurt help in glycemic control in prediabetics? | PH Chronicle
Can yogurt help in glycemic control in prediabetics? Content Editor: Dr. Shubham Gupta May 4, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Prevention, NCD, Research Findings A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group design conducted at Tokyo, Japan, between May and December 2022 used probiotic yogurt containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum OLL2712 to test for metabolic parameters in Prediabetics. Its mechanism of action is considered to be anti-inflammatory with high interleukin (IL)-10 inducing activity in immune cells by suppressing chronic inflammation in the intestine and visceral adipose tissue and improving insulin resistance, glucose, and lipid metabolism. The participants were aged between 20 and 64 years and had prediabetes. The participants were instructed to eat the 112-gram test yogurt daily for 12 weeks and continue their regular diet, lifestyle habits, and exercise. The current study confirmed that the levels of HbA1c and glycoalbumin decreased significantly in both groups. In the OLL2712 group, in comparison with the placebo, the HbA1c returned to baseline levels after intake was stopped. The changes in other metabolic parameters, like body weight, tended to increase slightly during the study period, with body mass index increasing significantly. The total cholesterol level values did not change. Serum IL-6 levels decreased significantly, but serum IL-10 levels increased. Also, during the post-observation period (16th and 20th weeks), IL-10 levels decreased significantly in both groups in comparison with those at week 0. The study concluded that the ingestion of yogurt containing OLL2712 can prevent glycemic control deterioration and maintain HbA1c levels within the normal range in adults with prediabetes in cases of long-term intake, as its effect declines with time. Social Injustice and Health: A Global Call for Urgent Action Content Editor: Dr. Sampriti May 23, 2025 at 10:00:03 AM International Health news A recent global report by the World Health Organization (WHO ), as reported by CIDRAP (May 9, 2025), has highlighted the severe impact of social injustice on public health , stating that it is responsible for widespread mortality. The report reveals significant disparities in life expectancy, with individuals in the poorest countries living 33 years less than those in wealthier nations. Furthermore, children in low-income countries face a mortality rate 13 times higher before the age of five compared to their counterparts in more affluent regions. Although there has been a global decline in under-five and maternal mortality since 2000, these disparities persist. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these inequities by creating unequal access to healthcare and increasing sovereign debt. The report emphasizes that social determinants , such as living and working conditions, are the primary drivers of these preventable health disparities and presents 14 key global recommendations for reform. The report highlights four key areas of focus: Tackling economic inequality by investing in social infrastructure and universal public services, Addressing structural discrimination , Navigating the challenges and opportunities of climate change and digital transformation to systematically advance health equity, and Establishing governance frameworks to enhance the coherence and impact of actions.
