Unique Nano-Composite coating to prevent Surgical Site Infections (SSI) February 16, 2023 at 5:59:11 PM Research, Infection prevention Post-operative surgical site infections (SSIs) affect 11% of patients in low and middle-income countries. Development of antibiotic resistance due to biofilm formation on the incision site or in the soft tissue inside, is one of the major causes. Researchers from ARCI, Hyderabad, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a nanocomposite coating (named as ATL) by combining water repellent (hydrophobic) and biocidal properties using a combinatorial approach. The ATL-coated sutures have demonstrated Higher percentage of biofilm inhibition Non- cytotoxicity when compared to triclosan-coated antibacterial sutures, which have shown cytotoxic properties. USA tuberculosis report: The current updates (2016-2022) Content Editor: Dr. Ghurumourthy June 29, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Tuberculosis, Infectious Disease, Report The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the National TB Indicators Project (NTIP) to evaluate and enhance tuberculosis (TB) control efforts across the U.S. The NTIP employs specific metrics to assess TB control effectiveness, including TB incidence rates, which have decreased by 71.2% in 37 jurisdictions over the last five years. Another critical metric is the completion of TB therapy within 12 months, with 61.5% of jurisdictions meeting or exceeding the national average of 89.7%. Additionally, the project tracks the percentage of patients with reported drug susceptibility results , which is crucial for accurate treatment and stands at 97% nationally . The proportion of contacts to sputum AFB smear-positive TB patients who received a latent TB infection diagnosis and completed treatment has also improved across most jurisdictions. These metrics help measure the success of TB programs and identify areas needing improvement, such as the high TB incidence rate among non-U.S.-born individuals, which is 15.7% above the target. Rabid seals attack surfers: South Africa faces unusual rabies outbreak Rabid seals attack surfers: South Africa faces unusual rabies outbreak Content Editor: Dr Sakshi Aggarwal July 18, 2024 Social Trends Rabies outbreak, One Health, Zoonotic disease Rabies spreads to people from the saliva of infected animals and is usually transmitted through a bite. An incident was reported in Cape Town after a seal bit several surfers. Four fur seals were euthanized for testing; three tested positive. To date, 11 fur seals in South Africa have tested positive for rabies , marking the first significant marine mammal outbreak. The symptoms include fever, pain, and unusual sensations at the wound site, followed by brain and spinal cord inflammation, leading to hyperactivity, hallucinations, hydrophobia, and paralysis. Rabies is common in regional wildlife but rare in seals. There is a potential risk of seal-to-human transmission as well. About 2 million fur seals live in the area, raising concerns about the virus spreading within colonies and to other species like otters. The following public safety measures are being taken by officials to prevent potential spread : 1. Vaccination of the surfers and swimmers if bitten. 2. Closing of beaches by lifeguards if aggressive seals are seen. 3. Dog owners are urged keep pets leashed.
