The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the National TB Indicators Project (NTIP) to evaluate and enhance tuberculosis (TB) control efforts across the U.S.
The NTIP employs specific metrics to assess TB control effectiveness, including TB incidence rates, which have decreased by 71.2% in 37 jurisdictions over the last five years.
Another critical metric is the completion of TB therapy within 12 months, with 61.5% of jurisdictions meeting or exceeding the national average of 89.7%.
Additionally, the project tracks the percentage of patients with reported drug susceptibility results, which is crucial for accurate treatment and stands at 97% nationally.
The proportion of contacts to sputum AFB smear-positive TB patients who received a latent TB infection diagnosis and completed treatment has also improved across most jurisdictions.
These metrics help measure the success of TB programs and identify areas needing improvement, such as the high TB incidence rate among non-U.S.-born individuals, which is 15.7% above the target.
