International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad July 24, 2023 UN Observances International Day, Fisheries, Sustainable development, One health, Environment • Fisheries are an essential source of food, employment, leisure, trade, and economic well-being for people worldwide, and they have become a key resource for achieving food security. • However, it's estimated that 1 in 5 fish caught come from illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices. • The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) claims that IUU fishing practices cause the loss of 11–26 million tonnes of fish annually, at an estimated economic value of US$10–23 billion. • Target 4 of Sustainable Development Goal 14 particularly calls on the international community to control harvesting and end IUU fishing to mitigate this loss. • In 2009, the FAO Conference adopted the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing, which was enforced on 5th June 2016. • In its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries, the UN General Assembly declared 5 June to be the "International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing" in December 2017. • The UN also named 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture to draw attention to the small-scale fishermen and women comprising 90% of the fisheries workforce.

Antibiotic drugs administered on livestock cuts carbon in soil Content Editor : Dr. Immanuel Joshua. E March 10, 2023 at 5:11:42 PM Environmental Health, One Health Researchers at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), have found that grazing by livestock leads to lower carbon storage in soil compared to grazing by wild herbivores . The soils from the wild and livestock areas differed in one key parameter called carbon use efficiency (CUE) , which determines the ability of microbes to store carbon in the soil. The soil in the livestock areas had 19% lower CUE. This difference appears to be due to the use of veterinary antibiotics such as tetracycline on livestock. When released into the soil through dung and urine, these antibiotics alter the microbial communities in the soil in ways that are detrimental to sequestering carbon . - Nigeria’s fight against malaria faces a funding crisis | PH Chronicle
Nigeria’s fight against malaria faces a funding crisis Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay May 23, 2025 at 10:00:01 AM International Health News, Malaria At Alegongo Primary Health Centre in Ibadan, Nigeria free rapid malaria tests, artemisinin-based treatments, and insecticide-treated nets have helped control the disease for local families. However, Nigeria still represented 26% of global malaria cases (over 260 million) and more than 30% of malaria-related deaths (nearly 600,000) in 2023. Through the WHO’s High Burden to High Impact program , malaria deaths dropped by 13% between 2017 and 2023. Initiatives supported by USAID such as the P resident’s M alaria I nitiative and J ohns H opkins’ C entre for C ommunication P rogramme ensured the distribution of millions of nets and medications until March 2025, when sudden US funding cuts disrupted shipments and stopped essential surveys on net ownership, diagnostic use, and infection rates. Now, clinics are at risk of running out of rapid test kits, ACTs, and injectable artesunate as trained workers lose their jobs and logistical support disappears. Experts caution that without new funding, prevention and monitoring systems could collapse by the end of summer, undoing years of progress. Researchers recommend investing in local net manufacturing and community-driven disease tracking to create long-term resilience independent of foreign aid. Previous Next

Report denies "SARS-COV-2 origin in Huanan Seafood Market" theory Content Editor: Dr. Siddharth Singh April 15, 2023 at 2:00:25 PM Global Public Health, COVID-19 Origin, Nature A paper recently published in Nature , demystifies the origin of the Coronavirus in the Huanan seafood market, as was once postulated. In early 2020 in China, 923 samples were collected from the environment and 457 samples were collected from 18 species of animals, comprising unsold contents of refrigerators and freezers, swabs from stray animals, and the contents of a fish tank. The virus was detected only in the environmental samples and not in animal samples. The report has been submitted by a research body in China named the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) by George F. Gao et al. It should also be noted that a previous study by Micheal Worobey et al. from the University of Arizona, stands in contention with the current report.
