  • How does physical activity affect a child’s liver health?

How does physical activity affect a child’s liver health? How does physical activity affect a child’s liver health? Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal June 7, 2024 Npj Gut and Liver Journal Children, Liver steatosis, Non-communicable Diseases, Research findings Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), which involved 2684 participants, the research tracked these activity levels from age 11 over 13 years. It assessed liver health and enzyme levels at age 24. The major findings of the study include: 1. Increased sedentary time (ST) from ages 11 to 24 is associated with higher chances of developing liver cirrhosis, severe liver steatosis, and elevated liver enzyme levels (ALT, AST, and GGT) by age 24. 2. Increased light physical activity (LPA) is linked to lower odds of liver cirrhosis, severe liver steatosis, and decreased liver enzyme levels. 3. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) reduces the odds of severe liver steatosis, partly through reduced fat mass, but does not significantly impact liver cirrhosis risk. Promoting LPA and MVPA while reducing ST in childhood helps prevent severe liver conditions in young adulthood. Click here to read more.

  • Regional and Rural Disparities in U.S. Diabetes Prevalence | PH Chronicle

Regional and Rural Disparities in U.S. Diabetes Prevalence Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy November 20, 2024 at 2:55:50 AM Non-communicable disease, rural-urban disparity A study using data from the 2019–2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) examined diabetes prevalence among 109,558 U.S. adults across census regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, West) and metropolitan statuses (large central metro, large fringe metro, small/medium metro, nonmetro). Diabetes prevalence was determined through self-reported physician diagnosis, and analyses accounted for demographic, socioeconomic, and body weight factors. The highest prevalence (14.8%) was observed in nonmetro counties in the South, while the lowest (7.0%) was recorded in large fringe metro counties in the Northeast. Adults in nonmetro Southern counties had significantly higher odds of diabetes—62% greater compared to those in large central metros —even after adjusting for key variables. Elevated odds were also noted in small and medium metros in the Midwest and Northeast, though these were largely attributed to socioeconomic and weight-related disparities. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted public health strategies to address diabetes risk, particularly in rural Southern areas where economic, healthcare, and lifestyle challenges are most pronounced. Baby blues a reality for 85% mothers but societal stigma still remains Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy May 25, 2024 at 3:04:13 PM Mental health, Research findings, perinatal health, MCH, maternal mortality Baby blues encompassing depression, anxiety, and long periods of crying is experienced by nearly 85% of women either during or after pregnancy. But despite prevalence in a majority this aspect of maternal health is wrought with taboos and stigma worldwide. These misconceptions result in misplaced guilt and fear to seek help among women. These obstacles to maternal mental health must be identified early and tackled promptly to safeguard healthy development and wellbeing of mother and child. The US FDA recently approved Zuranolone, a fast acting antidepressant making it the second approved pharmacotherapy for postpartum depression. Further research is direly needed to evaluate efficacy of existing and exploration of new treatment options. Raising awareness, conducting screening to identify perinatal depression and designing effective preventive interventions is the need of the hour. Click here to read more Previous Next
