  • India's medical education system is poised for significant transformation with the impending implementation of the National Medical Commission Bill 2019.

  • Recently, the Rajya Sabha passed the bill with two amendments, which the Lok Sabha also approved.

  • The bill aims to replace the controversial Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new regulatory body, the National Medical Commission (NMC).

  • Despite resistance from the medical community, the NMC seeks to bring transparency and quality to medical education.

  • The bill will introduce reforms like:

  1. National Exit Test (NEXT) for MBBS graduates,

  2. A single National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),

  3. Guidelines for course fees in private medical institutions

  • The Government is yet to issue further details and procedures.
