Methylocucumis oryzae: A methane-eating bacteria discovered in Pune Content Editor: Dr. Shubham August 29, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Methanotroph, Global warming, Climate change Researchers at the MACS (Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science) Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Western India's wetlands, rice fields, and Vetal Tekdi found Methylocucumis oryzae, the first native methane-eating bacteria in India. This bacterium promotes early flowering and increases rice plant yield , helping in climate mitigation by oxidizing methane. Despite its unique size and slow growth rate, it poses challenges for large-scale cultivation and biotechnological applications. Due to its shape, this bacterium, named ‘methane-eating cucumbers’, promotes early flowering and increases yield in rice plants. These bacteria can reduce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, by oxidizing it, thus helping climate mitigation. Methane's global warming potential is 26 times greater than that of CO2. Methanotrophs help mitigate this by oxidizing methane. Methylocucumis oryzae is larger than most bacteria, promotes rice plant growth, and is phylogenetically unique. The slow growth rate of this methanotroph poses challenges for large-scale cultivation and biotechnological applications . No other Methy-locucumis species has been reported from any other nation. - India’s step towards climate change
India’s step towards climate change India’s step towards climate change Content Editor: Dr. Tanya August 9, 2024 Press Information Bureau Climate Change, Disaster Management India has identified three primary categories for climate adaptation priorities: Knowledge Systems : Enhancing understanding of climate change risks and adaptation strategies. Risk Exposure Reduction : Implementing measures to decrease vulnerability to climate-related risks. Resilience and Adaptive Capacity : Strengthening the ability to withstand and adapt to climate impacts. To support these priorities, India has enacted the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) , which establishes a comprehensive framework for climate initiatives through various national missions. Each State and Union Territory has developed its own State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCC) tailored to address specific regional climate and disaster management challenges. In August 2022, India revised its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to bolster its commitment to the global response to climate change, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. A key feature of the updated NDC is the introduction of the Mission ‘LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) , aimed at encouraging responsible consumption by influencing the behaviors and attitudes of individuals and communities. - Predictors of modern contraceptive methods' usage in Pakistan | PH Chronicle
Predictors of modern contraceptive methods' usage in Pakistan Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami April 30, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Reproductive health, contraceptives Pakistan has exceeded South Asia's annual growth rate (1.2%) at its current rate of 2.5% , with a high fertility rate of 3.56 births per woman . Despite the introduction of the Costed Implementation Plan in 2020, the utilization of MCM is just 26.1% in the region, as found in this study. The most common short-term methods were condoms, pills, and injectables , while long-term methods were less common (among them, implants and IUDs were used). The most accurate predictors of MCM usage were reported as -Number of children (4 or more), - mother’s education (primary level), - husband’s education (middle level), - postnatal care visits of the mother, Lady Health Worker’s counseling as part of post-natal visits The study showed that women preferred to use MCMs to limit their family size rather than for spacing, particularly among older women, hence, there is a high unmet need for younger women to utilize MCMs to space out their pregnancy. The study underscored the need for counseling and guidance for women, especially during the postnatal period, and spousal support to increase the uptake of MCMs . Click here to read more. - Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)- FluSurv-NET for Influenza | PH Chronicle
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)- FluSurv-NET for Influenza Content EDitor: Dr. Shubham November 20, 2024 at 2:56:03 AM Influenza surveillance Between 9.3 million and 41 million infections, 100,000 to 710,000 hospitalisations, and 4,900 to 51,000 deaths are attributed to seasonal influenza in the United States each year. Since 2003, the FluSurv-NET system has tracked these hospitalizations, offering information on patient demographics, clinical traits, and results. Children under the age of fiv e and those over 65 had the greatest hospitalization rates. Obesity, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular disease were among the underlying medical issues that affected a sizable percentage of hospitalized patients. For the 2013–14 and 2022–23 influenza seasons, the lowest vaccination rates were among adults aged 18–49 , while the highest vaccination rates were among those aged 65 and older. The lowest vaccination rate was 29.3% in 2022–2023. In recent seasons, the most often used influenza test type was a molecular assay, specifically multiplex conventional molecular tests. Between 2018–19 and 2022–23, the percentage of FluSurv-NET patients who had acute respiratory signs and symptoms at hospital admission dropped from 90.6% to 83.2%. In order to address health inequities, the report emphasizes the significance of influenza vaccination and antiviral therapy, particularly for high-risk groups, as well as the necessity of continuous surveillance. In general, hospitalized individuals have poor vaccination rates. In order to lessen the impact of influenza on public health, the data from FluSurv-NET highlights the burden of hospitalizations related to influenza in the United States and the necessity of ongoing surveillance and vaccination campaigns.
