US FDA grants priority review for adult pneumococcal conjugate vaccine US FDA grants priority review for adult pneumococcal conjugate vaccine Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami January 9, 2024 CIDRAP Vaccination The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Merck Research Laboratories, a priority review of its application for approval of an investigational pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for adults. Merck's 21-valent (21-strain) pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, V116, is designed to help prevent pneumococcal disease and pneumococcal pneumonia in adults, including serotypes that are responsible for 83% of invasive pneumococcal disease in people 65 years of age and older. It has eight unique Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes not covered in currently licensed pneumococcal vaccines. The License Application is based on the results of multiple phase 3 trials that evaluated V116 in both vaccine-naïve and vaccine-experienced adults. In the STRIDE-3 trial, V116 elicited non-inferior immune responses to PCV20 (pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate vaccine) for all 10 serotypes covered by both vaccines and superior immune responses for 10 of 11 serotypes included in V116 but not covered by PCV20. The FDA has set a target action date of June 17, 2024.

Drones slash medication delivery time in Lahaul & Spiti: 100 units in just 26 minutes Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet Mohanty October 28, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Innovations in Health care Drones are becoming increasingly crucial in healthcare for delivering supplies to remote areas quickly. ICMR aims to streamline medical provisions' distribution from regional hospitals in Keylong to over eight primary health centers (PHCs) in the region. The inaugural flight successfully transported medications and diagnostic samples, significantly reducing the time compared to road transport. The drone swiftly covered 20 kilometers in just 26 minutes, a significant time reduction from the previous 120 minutes. ICMR plans to conduct more test flights in the coming days. This initiative is seen as a game-changer for healthcare in remote and challenging geographical areas. It also offers the potential to save lives in emergencies and challenging conditions. The research will provide insights into the utility of drones in these regions and whether they can complement traditional medical supply methods in difficult terrain. 20th World Blood Donation Day: Highlighting the need for increased voluntary blood donations Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy June 10, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Blood Donation, Public health On June 14, 2024, World Blood Donor Day will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the theme: “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors!” This milestone provides an opportunity to thank blood donors worldwide for their life-saving contributions and emphasize their significant impact on patients and donors. Annually, 118.5 million blood donations are collected worldwide, 40% of which come from high-income countries, representing only 16% of the global population. In low-income countries, 54% of blood transfusions are given to children under five , while in high-income countries, 76% are for patients over 60. Between 2008 and 2018, voluntary unpaid blood donations increased by 10.7 million. Seventy-nine countries now obtain over 90% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid donors . However, 54 countries still depend on family/replacement or paid donors for more than half of their supply. Also, out of 171 reporting countries, only 56 produce plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP) through plasma fractionation. Ninety-one countries imported all their PDMP, 16 reported no use of PDMP, and eight did not provide data. The plasma volume for fractionation per 1000 people varies widely among 45 reporting countries, from 0.1 to 52.6 liters, with a median of 5.2 liters. This year, the campaign seeks to promote a culture of regular blood donation among young people and the general public and to enhance the diversity and sustainability of the blood donor pool.
