- Reforming Labour Laws for Better Mental Well-being
Reforming Labour Laws for Better Mental Well-being Reforming Labour Laws for Better Mental Well-being Content Editor: Dr M Kasif February 21, 2025 PHC Editorial Bureau Mental health, SDG 3, Labour laws, Occupational health The Union Budget 2025-26 allocated ₹99,858.56 crore to MoH&FW, including ₹79.6 crore for Tele MANAS and increased NIMHANS funding . Despite this, blue-collar workers remain underserved due to policy gaps, unsafe work conditions, and stigma. Unlike corporate employees, they struggle to access mental health support due to job insecurity, long hours, and hazardous workplaces. The OSHWC Code (2020) covers only physical safety , while the CSC Code (2020) fails to recognize mental illness as an occupational disease , limiting compensation. With a 70-92% treatment gap, low-income workers are most affected. Labour laws must integrate mental health , ensuring compensation for work-related illness. Employers must regulate work hours, enforce mental health policies and promote Tele MANAS and counseling services. Expanding legal protections, employer accountability, and awareness will create safer, healthier workplaces for all.

Asia's climate situation in 2023 Asia's climate situation in 2023 Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal April 29, 2024 World Meteorological Organization Climate change, Disasters, Hazards Key climate change indicators, including sea level rise, glacier retreat, and surface temperature, have been rising faster than expected, according to the State of the Climate in Asia 2023 study. The mean temperature over Asia in 2023 was 0.91 °C higher than the reference period of 1991–2020, making it the second warmest on record. In the last forty years, the mass of the glaciers in High Mountain Asia has decreased significantly and at an accelerated rate, which was made worse in 2023 by record-breaking high temperatures and dry weather in the Tien Shan mountain range and the Eastern Himalayas. South-west China and the Hindu Kush region experienced severe drought conditions, with below-normal precipitation levels throughout the year. Asia faced a significant number of hydrometeorological hazards, primarily floods and storms, resulting in over 2,000 fatalities and impacting more than 9 million people. 80% of WMO Asia Members provide disaster risk reduction services, but less than 50% in Regional Association II offer vital climate projections, hindering effective adaptation to climate change. WHO alerts about Naturcold: a toxin contaminated cough syrup Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy August 3, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Global health, Child health, Pharmacovigilance, WHO Following the deaths of six children in Cameroon in April this year, the government, with support from the WHO, traced the toxin responsible to cough syrup sold under the trade name Naturcold. While the origins of the company are yet to be traced, the toxin responsible for the contamination has been identified. 28% Diethylene glycol, as opposed to the permitted 0.1%, is reported to be the contaminant responsible. Pharmaceutical experts explained that when the price of propylene glycol increased in 2021, many manufacturers substituted it with a cheaper but toxic alternative, diethylene glycol, which has caused many such poisonings across the world.
