New Antibiotic Molecule Shows Promise Against Drug-resistant Bacteria Content Editor: Dr Manu May 19, 2025 at 7:04:46 AM Antimicrobial Resistance, Antibiotics, Medical Research Researchers at McMaster’s University in Hamilton, Canada discovered a new antibiotic molecule, called lariocidin , which was isolated from soil samples collected from the university’s backyard and cultured for a year. The molecule was isolated from Paenibacillus spp . bacteria and belongs to a class of peptides called lasso peptides due to their knot-like shape. The molecule targeted the A-site in the 30s ribosomal subunit , which led to an interruption of the translation process and miscoding within the pathogenic bacteria. The molecule showed broad spectrum action against gram positive , gram negative and mycobacterial specimens even with species shown to be resistant to other antibiotics. This was attributed to the unique shape of the peptides and the new binding site which was not used by other antibiotics. Further, no cytotoxicity was noticed towards eukaryotic cells in in-vivo experiments, thus showing signs of not being toxic to humans. Animal experiments showed promising action towards a wide spectrum of bacteria and raised hopes of a new, powerful antibiotic. Researchers will now try to work on synthesising a functional antibiotic from the molecule. Previous Next

Assessment of Uptake and Disparities in RSV Prevention Measures Among Infants: Insights from a US-based study Content Editor: Dr Tanya January 22, 2025 at 9:29:09 AM Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Communicable Diseases, Vaccines In 2023, two new interventions to protect infants from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV ) became available in the United States: RSVpreF vaccine for pregnant individuals to be administered at 32-36 weeks gestation - RSVpreF, which protects infants through maternal vaccination, demonstrated an efficacy of 82% against severe RSV disease in the first few months of life. Nirsevimab , a monoclonal antibody for infants under 8 months - Nirsevimab was approved in the US for use in infants and showed high efficacy in clinical trials, with an 81% reduction in RSV-related hospitalizations. A study was conducted at Kaiser Permanente Northern California to assess the effect on uptake of RSVpreF and nirsevimab of various sociodemographic factors associated. Objective: To estimate the uptake of protective measures against RSV amongst mothers and infants born in at KPNC. Methods: Data from electronic medical records of infants born at KPNC to mothers aged 15 years to 49 years October 17, 2023 and March 31, 2024 was reviewed. Results: The results revealed that out of 17,251 infants, 77.5% received protection through either RSVpreF or Nirsevimab. 33.9% were exposed solely to RSVpreF, while 40.9% received only nirsevimab. A small percentage (2.7%) received both interventions. Notably, younger mothers were less likely to have received RSVpreF but more likely to have their infants receive nirsevimab. Conclusion: Nearly 80% of infants born during the RSV season received protection against the virus, with disparities in vaccination rates among different demographic groups. Click here to read more. The proposed plan is to develop a three-tier system of Disaster Management: The National Disaster Management Authority at the national level The State Disaster Management Authority at the state level The Urban Disaster Management Authority at the city level. The municipal commissioner will be heading the UDMA with the responsibility of preparing and implementing plans. Malaria's Menace: Climate Change, Population Growth Ignites Global Threat! Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma November 9, 2023 at 1:30:00 PM Climate Change, Malaria A recent analysis reveals an alarming impact of climate change : 5 billion people world wide could face malaria by 2040. The risk is especially high in Africa ,where 1 billion people are at risk, complicating control efforts. The analysis warned that extended transmission seasons and mosquito migration jeopardizes progress, affecting high-burden countries like Mozambique, which also face rapid population growth . Further projections show potential threats in the United States, with warmer temperatures and increased rainfall intensifying malaria risk in vulnerable areas On a positive note, Jonathan Kurti, won Falk Medical Research Trust Transformational Award for anti malarial research, offering hope with stage-specific drugs and antibodies for severe cases and short-term prevention. The Cutter's symposium: Emphasizing the necessity of accurate data analysis in nutritional research Content Editor: Dr. Anubhav May 18, 2024 at 3:00:00 PM Medical research, Nutrition The Cutter’s Symposium consists of lectures on preventive medicine. These are organized by the Department of Epidemiology and are held once or twice a year, funded by a bequest from John Clarence Cutter. During this year’s lecture, the importance of confounding factors in nutritional studies was discussed. In the 1970s, researchers discovered a link between ingesting fats and oils and the development of cancer. But since then, researchers have demonstrated that this relationship does not hold up. It is a common practice that those who follow a healthy diet, also have a healthy lifestyle. Hence, if the other factors of a healthy lifestyle aren't taken into consideration, spurious associations between diet and disease may be found. Various software and tools have been developed to address this confounding effect. Click here to read more. Previous Next
