Decline in Youth Tobacco Use Highlights Public Health Progress Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy November 20, 2024 at 2:55:46 AM Tobacco, Public Health Interventions, Adolescents The 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), conducted by the CDC and FDA, utilized a stratified, multi-stage cluster sampling design to evaluate tobacco use among middle and high school students across the United States. Students completed self-administered questionnaires to provide data on current tobacco product use, defined as use on at least one day in the past 30 days. The survey revealed that 10.1% of high school students and 5.4% of middle school students currently use tobacco products. E-cigarettes were the most commonly used product, reported by 7.8% of high school students and 2.8% of middle school students, followed by nicotine pouches and combustible cigarettes. The data also showed a notable decrease in e-cigarette use among high school students, dropping from 10.0% in 2023 to 7.8% in 2024, reflecting progress in reducing youth tobacco use. Interventions such as bans on flavored tobacco products, stricter age restrictions, awareness campaigns, and school-based education programs significantly contributed to this decline. However, disparities persist, with certain demographic groups showing higher usage rates. These findings underscore the effectiveness of current public health strategies but also highlight the ongoing need for evidence-based interventions to sustain and accelerate progress. The policy brief lays out four "building blocks" for the initiative. These include A strategic and operational framework to set standards and provide implementation guidance Standardized assessment tools for monitoring and reporting bacteriology and mycology laboratory services capacity at national and global levels A global AMR laboratory network includes laboratories designated by the WHO for bacteriology and mycology. Susceptibility testing at national, supranational, and specialized levels; and research and innovation in AMR diagnostics. Previous Next

Were the suddden cardiac deaths in Oregon associated with COVID-19 vaccination? Were the suddden cardiac deaths in Oregon associated with COVID-19 vaccination? Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar May 3, 2024 Center for Disease Control International Health, Health Research, COVID-19 In April 2021, cases of myocarditis after COVID-19 vaccination , particularly among young male recipients, were reported to be due to adverse events following vaccination. In response to these, a review of death certificates of previously healthy residents who died of cardiac or other causes from June 2021 to December 2022 was done. In the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report , which was published on April 11, 2024 , where Health Authority researchers examined 1292 death certificates and immunization data for documentation of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination within 100 days of death.
