  • COVID-19 survivors and digestive disorders: An interesting association | PH Chronicle

COVID-19 survivors and digestive disorders: An interesting association Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma January 30, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM COVID-19 disease, Infectious disease A recent study by Southern Medical University researchers in China, using the UK Biobank database, revealed that adult COVID-19 survivors face an elevated risk of digestive diseases. This includes: GI dysfunction Peptic ulcers GERD Gallbladder disease Severe liver disease Non-alcoholic liver disease Pancreatic disease The study involved 112,311 COVID-19 survivors, a contemporary group of 359,671 individuals, and a pre-COVID group of 370,979 in the UK. Relative to the contemporary group, COVID-19 survivors exhibited increased risks for various digestive conditions, with risks persisting one year after diagnosis. The study suggests that possible reasons for these elevated risks could be: Fecal-oral viral transmission of the virus interactions between SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors in the digestive tract. The findings emphasize the importance of healthcare systems being prepared to provide appropriate care. Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • Study reveals trends and challenges in tracking long COVID in England | PH Chronicle

Study reveals trends and challenges in tracking long COVID in England Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet May 30, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM COVID-19, Long-COVID, Complications With approval from NHS England, the study analyzed clinical data linked to COVID-19 test results, hospitalizations, and vaccinations. The analysis focused on trends in 16 clinical codes related to long COVID from November 2020 to January 2023. The research team calculated rates per 100,000 person-years and compared them using statistical models for different demographics and vaccination statuses. The study identified 55,465 recorded cases of long COVID, including 20,025 diagnosis codes and 35,440 assessment codes. The incidence of new long COVID records has increased throughout 2021 but declined in 2022. The long COVID rate was 177.5 cases per 100,000 person-years in women and 100.5 in men. The researchers concluded that recorded cases of long COVID were low between 2020 and 2023, with a notable decline in 2022. The study highlighted significant limitations in using EHR data to accurately identify and time the long COVID cases, suggesting that current diagnostic and referral codes may not adequately capture the true prevalence of the condition. This study underscores the need for improved methods to track and understand long COVID through health records , as current systems may not fully capture the scope of the issue. Social media - a new avenue for drug dealing Social media - a new avenue for drug dealing Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 1, 2024 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Substance Abuse, Drug Surveillance, Social media A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a report looking into the use of the dark web and social media for the procurement of drugs. The findings are as follows: - While sales on the dark web have been rising for the past few years, they have seen a decline based on studies in the year 2022 . However, these still outnumber sales at online shops and sales of new psychoactive substances (NPS). Though the number of individual transactions has decreased, the amount per transaction has increased , which might indicate that drugs are being sold wholesale on these platforms. Social media is increasingly becoming attractive as a platform for sale. This is because there is greater privacy, easier access, and less surveillance on these apps . Thus, it is essential to monitor the use of these platforms for the sale of drugs as well. Click here to read more.

Validation of the indigenous HPV testing kits for cervical cancer screening. Content Editor: Dr Sumana Mukhopadhyay April 25, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM Cervical cancer, HPV, Screening AIIMS, Delhi, is launching a groundbreaking project to validate made-in-India HPV testing kits for cervical cancer screening. The study will assess kit efficacy using global samples, starting with 1,200 of patients above 30 years of age with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) biorepository in France. Prof Neerja Bhatla, study investigator, emphasized the importance of accurate HPV screening to combat India's high cervical cancer burden and the affordability issue of the kits. The test involves cervical sample collection, similar to a Pap smear for detection . The initial work on indigenous kits began in 2016; now, cheaper, faster kits are developed to improve screening accessibility. The study, lasting three months , aims for credible results to inform national program implementation by year-end. Collaborations have been made with the IARC and other institutes, which will help expedite the sample collection and testing, cutting study time significantly. The importance of validating low-cost HPV tests for the Indian population to enhance cancer detection and control is the need of the hour. Click here to read more Previous Next
