Mediterranean diet and risk of mortality among women: Findings from a cohort study Content Editor: Dr. Shubham June 14, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Diet, Mortality, Cohort Study, Nutrition The Mediterranean diet consists of: 1. Nutritional Elements: fruits, nuts, whole grains, legumes, salmon, nuts, and vegetables (but not potatoes). 2. Fats :healthy fats, such as olive oil, are preferred as the proportion of monounsaturated is higher than saturated fatty acids. 3. Meat Intake : contains less red and processed meat than the median (80g/day). The Mediterranean diet is frequently cited as a beneficial eating style that can enhance the results of cardiovascular disease and cardiometabolic health. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet affects mortality rates among women, according to a 25-year-long cohort study, conducted in the US among 25315 women as part of the Women’s Health Study. The key findings include: A 23% lower risk of death from all causes is linked to a higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet. The decreased risk is largely explained by biomarkers associated with inflammation, triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, body mass index, and small molecule metabolites. The study examines various mediators that could account for this correlation, taking into account elements such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic well-being. These findings demonstrate the Mediterranean diet's potential health advantages in lowering women's mortality risk . The study highlights how crucial it is to take dietary trends into account when evaluating long-term health effects. Click here to read more. Previous Next

Wasting antibiotics: A prescription for trouble Content Editor: Dr Sumana Mukhopadhyay September 23, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Hospital Waste Management A study at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta revealed that over two years, 58,607 antibiotic doses were wasted, costing $255,503. The top 10 wasted antibiotics included some in shortage, emphasizing the need for waste reduction. Ampicillin was documented as the most wasted antibiotic; the other major drugs were clindamycin and cefazolin. The majority of the waste was accounted for in the first two days of admissions. While this study was conducted in a single setting, antibiotic waste is a concern in pediatric settings due to weight-based dosing. Antibiotic waste affects patient care quality and adds financial burdens. The following strategies can help reduce waste: Optimizing empiric treatments Early discharge planning Improved communication Hospitals can reduce their carbon footprint by minimizing drug waste , which contributes to healthcare-associated emissions. Reducing antibiotic waste requires: Systematic changes Focus on high-turnover services Discharge planning. Previous Next

Fire and air: CDC sounds the alarm on rising asthma emergencies after wildfires Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti September 6, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Public Health New York endured poor air quality in the early weeks of June due to smoke from Eastern Canadian wildfires making the air quality index unhealthy across the state. Daily mean PM 2.5 values were calculated and compared with the baseline value. The asthma-associated emergency department visits were recorded from the Electronic Syndromic surveillance system. They concluded that increased concentration of PM led to a three-fold increase in asthma-associated ED visits among older children and young adults. This study alerts physicians and public health experts towards low-risk communication and enhanced focus on high-risk individuals, devising effective wildfire smoke response plans. Previous Next

COVID-19: Co-infection with pseudomonas poses high risk of mortality COVID-19: Co-infection with pseudomonas poses high risk of mortality Content Editor: Dr.Gopika January 18, 2024 ASHE COVID-19, Mortality trends Case Western Reserve University researchers analyzed mortality in patients with Pseudomonas Blood Stream Infection(PA-BSI) and COVID-19 co-infections. A comparison of the pre-COVID-19 period with the COVID-19 period was done according to a report published in Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology(ASHE). A total of 6714 PA-BSI patients were identified and enrolled in the trial. Mortality was considerably greater in COVID-19-positive individuals with pseudomonas infection. On applying the modified Poisson analysis, COVID-19 co-infection was related to a 44% higher death rate. The study concluded that two reasons are responsible for the higher mortality among patients infected with PA-BSI and COVID-19 which include Pandemic-related staffing shortages and lack of infectious disease expertise.
