    Prioritizing Population Mental Health: Evidence-Based Strategies for the Future Prioritizing Population Mental Health: Evidence-Based Strategies for the Future Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy November 15, 2024 Harvard T H Chan School of Public health Public health policy, Population mental health lab Mental health affects nearly one-third of the population, contributing to chronic diseases and socioeconomic challenges. Speaking at the launch symposium of the Public Mental Health Lab at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Karestan Koenen , professor of psychiatric epidemiology , emphasized the need to shift from traditional treatment models to prevention-focused , population-based strategies. Recommendations included implementing paid family leave, food security programs, and housing stability measures to alleviate economic stressors, alongside evidence-based practices such as forest bathing, mindfulness, and exercise to reduce anxiety and depression. The role of technological innovations, such as digital mental health platforms and app-based PTSD therapies , was also highlighted as a scalable solution for resource-limited settings. Koenen called for increased funding, research, and public awareness to elevate mental health to the same priority level as physical health, transforming societal approaches to this urgent public health issue. Government health expenditure share in country’s share in country’s total GDP , increased from 1.13% (2014-15) to 1.35% (2019-2020) . The share of private health insurance is also going up . According to a NITI Aayog member , this shows maturity in terms of the insurance arena as those who can afford health insurance, can also avail from private players . Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti November 21, 2023 The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Environmental Health, Air Pollution, AQI The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi on November 13, 2023, was 358, categorized as "very poor" for the 24-hour average. The Air Quality Early Warning System predicts poorer air quality until November 14, 2023. As a regulatory measure, the Supreme Court ordered a ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi. Police patrolling to seize firecrackers and curb their sales reported violations of rules in many parts of Delhi. The odd-even vehicle rationing measure is on hold till further notice following the rains. The continued ban on construction and demolition activities in some areas has significantly impacted the lives of daily-wage laborers.

The four main strategies include: Stay Hydrated Stay Indoors Stay Alert Stay Covered The guidelines are as follows:- To maintain the availability of cool drinking water facilities with a reminder , and avoid hot beverages, including sugary and carbonated drinks. To stay covered and avoid direct sunlight , specifically during peak afternoon hours. To identify and recognize heat-related symptoms for fellow workers and provide immediate care on the spot. To be alert to weather forecasts through various media sources. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing with long sleeves to have a covered head. To make working conditions hospitable and equipped with proper first-aid kits and awareness regarding all necessary recommendations.     Nobel prize winners 2023 unveiled Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti October 18, 2023 at 1:15:00 PM Global Health, Vaccinology Biochemist Katalin Karikó and immunologist Drew Weissman received the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology this year. They received it for their contribution to mRNA vaccine development during the COVID-19 pandemic. Karikó worked towards introducing in-vitro mRNA in clinical practice or therapy, while Weissman researched the importance of dendritic cells in immune surveillance. Their efforts together led to the development of base-modified mRNA. The base modification resulted in: Reduced inflammatory responses Increased protein production.
