ABHA- based scan and share: Enhancing OPDs digital efficiency. ABHA- based scan and share: Enhancing OPDs digital efficiency. Content Editor: Dr. Sumana August 12, 2024 Press Information Bureau Health service, Health programme, Universal health coverage The Government of India's ABHA-based Scan and Share system , launched in October 2022, is significantly enhancing outpatient department (OPD) registrations across the country. The initiative has benefited over 3.87 crore patients by streamlining the registration process through QR codes at hospitals registered on the Health Facility Registry (HFR). More than 5,800 public healthcare institutions have adopted this system, with over 2,400 hospitals actively using it to serve 1.80 lakh patients daily. To support this digital transformation, the National Health Authority (NHA) and state governments have provided training, financial incentives, and patient awareness campaigns. The initiative is further strengthened by the introduction of a "Scan and Pay" feature, currently being piloted, allowing patients to pay for diagnostic services via mobile applications and a unified health record linkage system . Additionally, diagnostic labs are integrating with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) to deliver lab reports digitally, ensuring patients can access their results remotely, thus reducing logistical and financial burdens. This ongoing effort not only aims to enhances the efficiency of OPD services but also contributes to the broader goal of making public healthcare more accessible and affordable for all . - Impact of early air and noise pollution exposure on mental health: Insights from a study
Impact of early air and noise pollution exposure on mental health: Insights from a study Impact of early air and noise pollution exposure on mental health: Insights from a study Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 8, 2024 Journal of American Medical Association Network Open Air Pollution, Noise Pollution, Mental Health Disorders, Research Findings Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) researchers in the United Kingdom followed a birth cohort (n=14901) in the city of Bristol to understand the association between perinatal and early childhood exposure to air (NO2 and PM2.5) and noise pollution with mental health disorders (anxiety, depression, and psychotic experiences) later in life. Certain confounders were identified, including a family history of psychiatric illness, maternal education, ethnicity, population density, and neighborhood characteristics. These were considered as covariates during analysis. As NO2 and PM2.5 have different absolute values, results were standardized by dividing the scores by the IQR. The following are the findings: After covariate adjustment, InterQuartile Range (IQR)(0.72μg/m3) increase in PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy and childhood was related to increased odds of psychotic experiences . (AOR [Adjusted Odds Ratio] during pregnancy:1.11[1.04-1.19); and (AOR during childhood: 1.09[1.00-1.10]). IQR increase in PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy was linked to increased odds of depression .(AOR: 1.10[1.02-1.18]) Increased exposure to noise pollution during childhood and adolescence led to higher odds of anxiety .(AOR during adolescence:1.22[1.02-1.45]) Thus, the team concluded that early pregnancy and childhood exposure to air pollution led to an increased risk of depression and psychotic experiences. In contrast, increased exposure to noise pollution during childhood and adolescence led to increased risk of anxiety. These could provide future targets for interventions to reduce the disease burden. Click here to read more.

No Alcohol at Medical Conferences - DGHS Advisory issued Content Editor: Dr. Sangya Chaudhary April 18, 2023 at 6:08:00 PM Public Health Regulations, Non-Communicable diseases The Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued an advisory to all medical associations in India, stating that alcohol should be avoided in medical conferences, workshops, seminars, and CME sessions to set an example of good habits that can be emulated by others. The advisory aims to reduce the risk factors and the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the long run. Alcohol consumption is a causal factor in more than 200 diseases, injuries, and other health conditions according to the WHO, and is associated with a risk of developing mental and behavioural disorders, liver cirrhosis, some cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, NCDs are estimated to account for 63% of all deaths in country. Cardiovascular diseases caused 27% of the deaths, followed by respiratory diseases (11%), cancer (9%), diabetes (3%) and others (13%), as per the WHO-NCD India profile (2018). The rise of NCDs in India has been driven by primarily four major risk factors: tobacco use, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol, and unhealthy diet. Previous Next

Invasive meningococcal disease among Umrah pilgrims: The need for vaccination Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay June 10, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Invasive Meningococcal Disease, Vaccination, International Health News An investigation was conducted into cases of Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) associated with Umrah pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia. Here are the key findings: Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria and can be severe, spreading through respiratory droplets. Vaccination is available as a preventive measure. Saudi Arabia mandates vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, although enforcement is challenging due to Umrah's year-round nature. In 2024, 12 IMD cases were reported in travelers who had recently completed Umrah in the US, UK, and France. Subsequent investigations revealed that most cases involved unvaccinated individuals, with the bacteria belonging to serogroups W and C. Disturbingly, some strains exhibited resistance to ciprofloxacin antibiotics. The report underscores the significance of vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and they are advised to receive a quadrivalent meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine. Public health authorities are advised to take ciprofloxacin resistance into account when prescribing preventive antibiotics for close contact with IMD patients with a travel history to Saudi Arabia. Fire and air: CDC sounds the alarm on rising asthma emergencies after wildfires Fire and air: CDC sounds the alarm on rising asthma emergencies after wildfires Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti September 6, 2023 Public Health Public Health New York endured poor air quality in the early weeks of June due to smoke from Eastern Canadian wildfires making the air quality index unhealthy across the state. Daily mean PM 2.5 values were calculated and compared with the baseline value. The asthma-associated emergency department visits were recorded from the Electronic Syndromic surveillance system. They concluded that increased concentration of PM led to a three-fold increase in asthma-associated ED visits among older children and young adults. This study alerts physicians and public health experts towards low-risk communication and enhanced focus on high-risk individuals, devising effective wildfire smoke response plans.
