An investigation was conducted into cases of Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) associated with Umrah pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia.
Here are the key findings:
Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria and can be severe, spreading through respiratory droplets.
Vaccination is available as a preventive measure.
Saudi Arabia mandates vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, although enforcement is challenging due to Umrah's year-round nature.
In 2024, 12 IMD cases were reported in travelers who had recently completed Umrah in the US, UK, and France.
Subsequent investigations revealed that most cases involved unvaccinated individuals, with the bacteria belonging to serogroups W and C.
Disturbingly, some strains exhibited resistance to ciprofloxacin antibiotics.
The report underscores the significance of vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and they are advised to receive a quadrivalent meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine.
Public health authorities are advised to take ciprofloxacin resistance into account when prescribing preventive antibiotics for close contact with IMD patients with a travel history to Saudi Arabia.
