NHM to PMSSM- a nominal change or a push in the right direction? NHM to PMSSM- a nominal change or a push in the right direction? Content Editor: Dr. Akhila Nandan July 31, 2023 The Indian Express National Health Program, Universal Health Coverage, National Health Mission The National Health Mission will soon be renamed Pradhan Mantri-Samagra Swasthya Mission (PM-SSM) by the central government. The announcement was anticipated to be made during the Central Council for Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) meeting on July 14-15th, 2023. The decision has already been approved by the Mission Steering Committee, headed by the Union Health Minister. NHM mainly focused on primary and secondary care, whereas the PM-SSM will focus on developing tertiary care facilities at district hospitals. This two-day Chintan Shivir will also provide further information on issues of the National Organ Transplant Program and District Residency Program , among others. However, no official announcement has been made yet.

Slashing screening costs from ₹5,000 to ₹500 , the tool predicts both fat accumulation (steatosis ) and liver scarring (fibrosis ), which traditionally requires expensive liver elastography. Internally validated on 10,000+ patients, it addresses a critical need - studies suggest nearly 38% of Indians may have fatty liver, a silent epidemic linked to diabetes and heart disease. This tool is currently being deployed in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh .

Content Editor: Dr. Manu Goel March 19, 2024 Centre For Research On Energy And Clean Air Air Pollution, National Clean Air Programme The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air published a report detailing the air quality status across India for February 2024. 253 cities used the Continuous A mbient A ir Q uality M onitoring S tation (CAAQMS) reporting data for 80% of the days. The salient features of the report are as follows: In 160 countries, the PM 2.5 levels were below the standards set by India's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Meanwhile, only 1 city complied with the WHO standards. Byrnihat in Meghalaya topped the list of most polluted cities while Satna in Madhya Pradesh was the cleanest. February saw a marked improvement in air quality compared to January. This marked improvement could have been attributed to improving wind speeds, rising temperatures, reduced emissions in cities, and other meteorological factors. Click here to read more.

Key Initiatives: Kishanganj – Sports for Empowerment: Over 500 girls participated in a multi-sport event featuring Kabaddi, Badminton, and Athletics. Led by the District Magistrate and local officials, the initiative emphasized academic and athletic excellence, while awareness drives highlighted government schemes for girls. Araria – Tackling School Dropouts: Adolescent groups under the M ahadalit V ikas M ission launched a door-to-door campaign, successfully re-enrolling 21 girls in school. This model, now expanded district-wide, aims to bridge gender gaps in education. Nawada – Skill Development for Marginalized Girls: A pilot program under the B ihar S kill D evelopment M ission enabled five Mahadalit girls to enroll in Emergency Medical Technician training—a first in their communities. Sugar-sweetened beverages: 23% rise in intake Sugar-sweetened beverages: 23% rise in intake Content Editor: Dr. Prachi September 6, 2024 British Medical Journal Nutrition, Diet, Lifestyle, Obesity A population-based study spanning children and adolescents across 185 countries was recently published in the British Medical Journal. The study analyzed the trends in the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) among them from 1990 to 2018. The study found that the intake of SSBs in the target population increased by almost 23%. The increase was heterogeneously distributed globally, with the highest amount in Latin America and the Caribbean (9.1 servings/week) and the highest in Africa (106%). The factors related to increased intake were: Older children (vs younger children) Urban areas (vs rural areas) Parents with higher education (vs lower education) These trends parallel those of obesity in these populations, thus possibly implicating the role of SSBs in increasing levels of obesity among children and adolescents.
