Sugar-sweetened beverages: 23% rise in intake Sugar-sweetened beverages: 23% rise in intake Content Editor: Dr. Prachi September 6, 2024 British Medical Journal Nutrition, Diet, Lifestyle, Obesity A population-based study spanning children and adolescents across 185 countries was recently published in the British Medical Journal. The study analyzed the trends in the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) among them from 1990 to 2018. The study found that the intake of SSBs in the target population increased by almost 23%. The increase was heterogeneously distributed globally, with the highest amount in Latin America and the Caribbean (9.1 servings/week) and the highest in Africa (106%). The factors related to increased intake were: Older children (vs younger children) Urban areas (vs rural areas) Parents with higher education (vs lower education) These trends parallel those of obesity in these populations, thus possibly implicating the role of SSBs in increasing levels of obesity among children and adolescents. Targeted nutritional support to affected households can avert ~400,000 TB deaths by 2035 Targeted nutritional support to affected households can avert ~400,000 TB deaths by 2035 Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy January 31, 2025 The Lancet Global Health Tuberculosis, Infectious disease modelling, Nutrition, Health economics A recent modelling study conducted by researchers from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London and Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore; published in Lancet Global health, has evaluated the cost-effectiveness of nutritional support for TB households in conjunction with impact of the intervention on further transmission of TB . The study estimated that about 900,000 TB episodes and around 400,000 fatalities can be prevented if India can implement nutritional support for all household contacts of TB patients in at least 50% of families where people are undergoing treatment for tuberculosis from 2023 to 2035. These figures correspond to preventing 2·2% (2·1–2·4) of all TB cases and 4·6% (4·2–5·5) of all TB fatalities. This proposed intervention would cost the nation around Rs.15k per DALYs prevented . The study also estimated that on the contrary nutritional support to only the patient undergoing TB treatment can avert 46700 new cases and 234,300 TB fatalities . Click here to read more.

December 26, 2022 The Hindu COVID-19, Omicron Over the course of the pandemic, genome sequencing of the virus and rapid sharing of data has been key to tracking the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and early identification of emerging variants. SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data previously submitted from China to GISAID, a globally accessible repository of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences, shows that over the months, the country has seen isolated cases linked to multiple variants of the virus seen previously. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has added another category of variants referred to as ‘Omicron subvariants under monitoring’.Currently, the Omicron subvariants being monitored under this category include BA.2.75, BA.4.6, XBB, BA.2.3.20 and sublineages of BA.5 including BF.7 and BQ.1. While the first sample belonging to lineage BA.4.6 dates back to December 2021, lineage BA.2.3.20 was detected in multiple countries recently in August 2022.
