Some 15% of the 11,118 homes in and around Kumbanad are locked up because the owners have migrated or live with their children abroad. The decadal rise in population in Kerala between 2001 and 2011 was the lowest (4.9%) among all states Fertility rates in the state have been 1.7 to 1.9 births per woman for at least 30 years now The ailing elderly, old-age homes, labor shortages, migration of the young, declining population, and ghost towns in Kerala are an indication of the future of the vibrant India of today.

RISUG - The most effective contraceptive in history RISUG - The most effective contraceptive in history Content Editor: Dr Urmimala Maiti November 1, 2023 Andrology-Open Access Sexual and Reproductive Health, Contraceptives, Research findings The journal Andrology has published a multicentric study on RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance) conducted by ICMR at five sites across India. It is a prospective, non-randomized, open-labeled, phase III clinical trial. It studied the effect of RISUG by injecting 60mg of Styrene Maleic Anhydride (SMA) in a vehicle of Di-Methyl Sulphoxide (DMSO) in the vas deferens of 303 healthy, sexually active, married males (age group- 25-40 years) attending family planning clinics. • Malaria puzzle: Where climate and socioeconomic factors intersect

Malaria puzzle: Where climate and socioeconomic factors intersect Malaria puzzle: Where climate and socioeconomic factors intersect Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad August 31, 2023 Research Findings Malaria, Climate, Urbanisation Malaria continues to be a public health problem in many African and Southeast Asian nations, including India, despite improvements in malaria-related morbidity and mortality. With data from the 69th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), a cross-sectional study was carried out in Haryana to investigate the influence of climatic and socioeconomic factors in predicting population vulnerability to malaria in India. The study confirms that households in high and moderately high climatically vulnerable states were more likely to experience malaria. A further noteworthy finding of this study is that urban households are more susceptible to malaria. One cannot undervalue the significance of waste collection and sustainable disposal of it, a lack of which makes urban homes more susceptible to malaria. This may also be the result of spatial changes brought on by: Slum growth Unplanned urbanization Migration Poorly executed developmental operations. Results from this study also show how crucial it is to include local, district, and state-level malaria management programmes with climate change. Programmes for behavioral change communication, and awareness must be paired with this. Recognizing that a rise in living standards will significantly help combat the malaria epidemic is vital. Nevertheless, targeted preventive actions taken by state and local governments can significantly address the problem and should support all-encompassing development efforts .

  • How has the antidepressant use been post-COVID?

How has the antidepressant use been post-COVID? How has the antidepressant use been post-COVID? Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami March 13, 2024 Centre for Infectious Disease Research and Policy Mental health, COVID-19 A study published in Paediatrics showed that antidepressant use has steeply risen among youth in the USA post-COVID, especially among females. The study compared data post-March 2020 with that from 2016-2019. The increase was by 130% in female adolescents 12-17 years old and about 60% in female young adults 18-25 years old. This increase parallels the rise in rates of anxiety and depression during the pandemic. Interestingly, before the pandemic, prescriptions for male teenagers were rising by 8.7% per month, but there was a decrease in prescriptions during and after the pandemic. The researchers hypothesized that this difference could be due to how social norms condition girls to internalize anxiety and depression and boys to externalize antisocial behavior and substance abuse when emotionally distressed.
