COVID-19 variants and its association with long-COVID COVID-19 variants and its association with long-COVID Content Editor: Dr. M Swathi Shenoy September 11, 2023 Centre for Infectious Disease Research and Policy Global Health, COVID-19 A recent study was conducted to find the association between virus variants, vaccination, past exposure, and the risk of developing long COVID symptoms. The study compared the risk of developing PCC after infection with Wild type, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron SARS-CoV-2, depending on previous vaccinations and/or infections. The study was a prospective cohort study conducted in Germany, conducted before the introduction of the bivalent vaccine. An estimated 18,000 individuals were included in the study. The salient findings of the study were: 2,822 participants reported symptoms 12 weeks after infection, of whom 5.1% had no previously reported symptoms. Compared to those who were vaccinated three times and those who had omicron infection, the unvaccinated individuals with wild type of infection had a higher risk for long COVID. The risk was also higher among those unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals with alphavirus infection. Regardless of the time since the last infection, the number of previous infections was strongly linked to a lower risk of long COVID-19. However, these factors did not have any effect on the symptom severity of long-COVID. The lack of protection against long covid may turn out to be a serious problem in the future.

  • Record breaking fertility rate in South Korea

Record breaking fertility rate in South Korea Record breaking fertility rate in South Korea February 23, 2023 CNN Demography, Total Fertility Rate Countries need a fertility rate of 2.1 to maintain a stable population, in the absence of immigration. But, the fertility rate or the average number of children expected per woman in South Korea fell to 0.78 in 2022 – down from 0.81 the previous year. The country recorded more deaths than births for the first time in 2020, a trend that has continued since. Similar demographic declines are being seen in several other Asian countries including Japan and China, raising concerns there will be too few people of working age to support the ballooning elderly population. The South Korean government has spent more than $200 billion trying to boost the population over the past 16 years. It also introduced various initiatives such as extending paid paternity leave, offering monetary “baby vouchers” to new parents, and social campaigns encouraging men to contribute to childcare and housework. But despite the economic factors at play, throwing money at the problem has proved ineffective.

WHO report: Status of multi-country outbreak of Mpox WHO report: Status of multi-country outbreak of Mpox Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay July 12, 2024 WHO News Section WHO report, Mpox, International health, Outbreak The recent WHO Mpox External Situation Report provides an overview of the global Mpox outbreak status. The report indicates that there have been 97,745 confirmed cases and 203 deaths across 116 countries worldwide, with South Africa experiencing a severe outbreak with a high case fatality rate. In May 2024 alone, there were 646 new cases and 15 deaths, primarily in the African, European, and American regions. However, the report acknowledges that underreporting , particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), remains a significant challenge. The data shows that the majority of cases (96.4%) are male, predominantly within the 18-44 age group, with sexual contact being the primary mode of transmission . Common symptoms include a rash and fever, and the report highlights a notable 51.9% co-infection rate with HIV. In response, the WHO recommends targeted vaccination for high-risk group s and emphasizes the ongoing need for robust public health interventions and accurate reporting to manage the outbreak effectively.
