    Message from the Director's desk before the World Immunization Week 2023 Message from the Director's desk before the World Immunization Week 2023 Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala Maiti April 24, 2023 WHO News section Global health, Vaccination, Immunization The Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals, WHO, Kate Obrien, speaks on the highlights of the: First Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization held in March 2023. The meeting stressed intensifying routine and catch-up immunization activities and outbreak response preparedness. The theme for World Immunization Week (24 to 30 April 2023) : "The Big Catch-up" is in line with the Immunization Agenda 2030 to spread awareness about the role of immunization in vaccine-preventable illnesses. The meeting also released the updated Roadmap for COVID-19 vaccination in the Omicron era.

K. Mishra, along with a review of the current scenario. As per the meeting’s statistics: Globally, a total of 2,96,219 new cases have been reported in the past 7 days India's total new case tallied to 223 in the past week. The daily average of new cases is less than 50 The weekly test positivity rate is less than 0.2%. Dr. P. K. Content Editor: Dr. Sivanthiga February 19, 2024 The Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia 2023 Maternal and Child Health; Environment and Sanitation, Ventilation A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted over 15 months in rural Bangladesh, involving 1267 pregnant women. 639 participants were randomized into the control group and continued using traditional cookstoves, whereas 628 participants were allotted to the intervention group and were provided with a low-cost kitchen with improved cookstoves. The study aimed to assess the impact of a low-smoke environment during pregnancy on birth outcomes. The low-cost model kitchen featured the following to reduce biomass fuel exposure during pregnancy: A concrete pillar A cement concrete floor A single door with three windows A wooden roof frame with ample ventilation This intervention was initiated during the first trimester, and the follow-up was until 42 days postpartum. The results furnished are: The prevalence of LBW among neonates and maternal blood carbon monoxide saturation (SpCO) were assessed. The risk of LBW was reduced by 37% (adjusted risk ratio:0.63) in the group with a better cooking environment as compared to the group with traditional cookstoves. The maternal SPCO levels were significantly reduced between the second and third trimesters in the intervention group. Click here to read more.

    Sprinkle of change: Millet flour takes the tax spotlight Sprinkle of change: Millet flour takes the tax spotlight Content Editor: Dr. Immanuel Joshua E October 19, 2023 Times of India Nutrition, Millets, International Year of Millets The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister in the 52nd GST Council meeting, has decided to levy a lower 5% tax on millet-based flour . This would be eligible when sold in pre-packaged and labeled form. Flour containing at least 70% millets will attract 0% GST if sold pre-packaged and labeled. The Council also decided to reduce GST on molasses to 5% from 28%. The council has also exempted alcohol for human consumption from the levy.
