  • Can iron imbalance lead to increased risk of long COVID?

Can iron imbalance lead to increased risk of long COVID? Can iron imbalance lead to increased risk of long COVID? Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay Kelkar April 1, 2024 Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy COVID-19, Anemia, Research Findings A new study published in Nature Immunology links low iron levels early on in a COVID-19 infection to an increased risk of developing long COVID. Researchers tracked patients' blood iron levels for a year after COVID-19 infection. Those with long COVID showed irregular iron levels and anemia within two weeks. People with long COVID had worse initial infections and took longer to regulate iron levels. Blood tests from moderate/severe cases revealed high levels of hepcidin, a marker for inflammatory anemia. Asymptomatic/mild cases showed no iron disruptions. The study suggests a link between iron dysregulation, oxygen deficiency, and long COVID. This raises the possibility of using iron supplements during the initial infection or as a treatment. Further research is needed to confirm if iron supplementation can prevent or treat long COVID. The Director, NIMHANS, emphasized intersectoral coordination for data collection and its segment-wise analysis, i.e., age groups and socio-economic strata of the consumers, etc., and to gain knowledge on existing strategies for preventing excessive consumption. The results from the study will help formulate guidelines for protecting the consumers of online gaming from deleterious effects. C lick here to read more.

  • Frequent Use of Mobile Phones and Cardiovascular Events: Sleep Behavior, Stress, and Neuroticism

Frequent Use of Mobile Phones and Cardiovascular Events: Sleep Behavior, Stress, and Neuroticism Frequent Use of Mobile Phones and Cardiovascular Events: Sleep Behavior, Stress, and Neuroticism Content Editor: Dr. Shubham September 27, 2024 Canadian Journal of Cardiology Cell phone Usage Risks, Digital A new study in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology links increased cell phone call time to a higher risk of cardiovascular events like stroke and heart failure. Poor sleep, psychological distress, and neuroticism (2.25%-11.50%) are significant drivers of this association. Regular cellphone users had a 4% higher risk of cardiovascular disease (hazard ratio [HR] 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.06) compared to non regular users. The risk increased with more time spent on calls. The risk is more pronounced in smokers (P for interaction 0.001) and people with diabetes (P for interaction 0.037). The study was conducted by analyzing data from a large cohort of 444,027 participants over a significant period of 12.3 years. Information of cellphone usage, including call duration was collected and monitored the participants’ health outcomes, particularly cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart failure. The study is observational and cannot prove causation. They suggest focusing on overall healthy lifestyle habits to reduce cardiovascular risk. Click here to read more

Chinese scientists identify a new coronavirus strain in bats, similar to Covid-19 Chinese scientists identify a new coronavirus strain in bats, similar to Covid-19 Content Editor: Dr Manu March 18, 2025 The Cell Journal Coronavirus, Pandemic, Virology, Surveillance A study conducted by the Key Laboratory of Virology and Biosafety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China detected a strain of coronavirus named HKU5-CoV lineage 2 in bats . It belongs to the same group as the MERS-related coronavirus species of virus responsible for the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak. The new virus detected was found to bind with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors with a HKU5-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) and human ACE2 complex visualised by electron microscopy. This was a better adaptation as expressed by lineage 1 of the HKU5-CoV virus. Though the potential human spillover potential needs to be examined, the study underlines a strong mechanism for human infections and underlines the potential zoonotic risk for the organism.
