Clean air dream deferred: CSE Report highlights shortcomings in NCAP Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi July 24, 2024 at 4:49:27 PM Air quality, public health The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change introduced The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) in January 2019. The goal is to reduce particle pollution by up to 40% by 2025–2026 compared to the base year of 2019–20 . Setting clean air targets for 131 designated unhealthy cities is a first for the country. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has raised concerns about the NCAP, stating it risks becoming merely a dust control initiative. Key points from their recent assessment include: 1. 64% of NCAP and 15th Finance Commission funds have been spent on road dust mitigation, with minimal allocation for controlling emissions from industries, vehicles, and biomass burning. 2 . The current focus on PM10 as the benchmark for city performance should shift to the more harmful PM2.5. 3. There is a disconnect between the NCAP and Swachh Bharat Survekshan performance metrics, leading to inconsistencies in city rankings. 4. NCAP must support energy transitions across industries, transport, and households, and integrate sustainable mobility and waste management practices. 5. Of the funds utilized, disparities exist in fund allocation between different cities. CSE emphasizes the need for repurposed strategies to effectively improve air quality. Global Warming Mitigation Measures by India Metrological Department Global Warming Mitigation Measures by India Metrological Department Content Editor: Dr. Jasmin Nilima Panda April 24, 2023 Press Information Bureau Climate Change, Global Warming, Global Health The India Metrological Department (IMD) under Ministry of Earth Sciences issues forecast and colour coded warnings for severe weather events including heat waves. IMD in collaboration with local health departments have started the heat action plan since 2013 to forewarn people about the heat waves and advise preventive actions. The Heat Action Plan, implemented in 23 States, in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is a comprehensive early warning system and preparedness plan for extreme heat events constituting immediate as well as longer-term actions to increase preparedness, information-sharing, and response coordination to reduce the health impacts of extreme heat on vulnerable populations. A report by Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) stated that the population of insects is expected to rise across the world and enhance crop destruction due to global warming. Regarding this, IMD issues agro-meteorological advisories through Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) scheme every Tuesday and Friday for 700 agriculturally important districts and around 3100 blocks by 130 Agromet Field Units (AMFUs) and 199 District Agromet Units (DAMUs). These advisories include the information regarding pests and diseases which affect agriculture and Pest-Weather calendars prepared for every crop. Seasonal Outlook is an initiative by IMD, which depicts the expected scenario of heat waves by estimating temperatures for April, May & June in the last week of March. This is followed by Extended Range Outlook , issued every Thursday for next two weeks. Heat wave warnings are issued for next 5 days with outlook for next 2days.

Urgent Call to Address Cryptosporidiosis: A Neglected Threat to Child Health Urgent Call to Address Cryptosporidiosis: A Neglected Threat to Child Health Content Editor: Dr Chinmay January 16, 2025 Global Health Now (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health) Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), Cryptosporidiosis, International Health News Cryptosporidiosis is a severe public health issue, causing acute diarrhea, malnutrition, developmental delays, and high child mortality, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Asia. Responsible for 7.5 million cases and 200,000 child deaths annually , the disease primarily affects children under five. Existing treatment, nitazoxanide , is largely ineffective for malnourished or immunocompromised patients, leaving a critical need for better solutions. The Cryptosporidiosis Therapeutics Advocacy Group (CTAG ) is pushing for its inclusion in the WHO’s list of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) , which would drive global awareness, funding, and collaboration. Such recognition could enhance global awareness, increase funding, and foster collaboration, thereby catalyzing research efforts, expediting the development of treatments and vaccines, and encouraging pharmaceutical companies to invest through incentives like FDA priority review vouchers. Promising new treatments are currently in clinical trials, offering hope for effective solutions. Global action is essential to reduce cryptosporidiosis’s devastating impact on vulnerable populations, especially young children in low-income regions. Click here to read more.

Air pollution: The deadly and growing risk factor Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar July 5, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Air pollution, Global health, Noncommunicable diseases The State of Global Air (SoGA) report, in partnership with the UN Children’s Fund(UNICEF), warned that air pollution is the second leading global risk factor for premature death. Pollutants like outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) come from burning fossil fuels and biomass in sectors like transportation, residential homes, and wildfires and cause more than 90% of global air pollution deaths, according to the report of SoGA. It also contributes to greenhouse gases that warm the planet, so regions with high NO2 levels experience high ozone levels, resulting in greater health effects. The report also revealed young children’s exposure has resulted in 1 in 5 global deaths, asthma, pneumonia, and inequities more than it does in developed countries. It also claimed that, due to better awareness, the death rates of children under 5 have decreased by 53% since 2000 because of increased access to clean energy for cooking purposes. Interim analysis on universal access to essential medicines Interim analysis on universal access to essential medicines Content Editor: Dr. Sangya Chaudhary October 12, 2023 United Nations News Section Global Health, Sustainable Development Goals One of the key UN Sustainable Development Goals is universal access to essential medicines (UN's SDG 3). However, the progress towards universal access to essential medicines is lagging in 2023. The World Health Organization's 2025 target of "an additional billion people accessing medicines without financial hardship" is less than halfway achieved. The 2023 UN General Assembly (UNGA 78) is expected to bring outcomes that may significantly impact this issue. This assembly will provide a pivotal opportunity for change, including: Demanding new policies Increasing investments Global partnerships The UNGA 78 includes the SDG Summit and the U.N. high-level meetings, which were held in the month of September 2023. The focus was on: Meaningful private sector involvement Concrete action to bridge gaps in access Aid in achieving global health objectives A remarkable example was Viatris, a global medicines supplier, which reached a billion patients in 2022, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts.
