- Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors
Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors Content Editor: Dr. Sumana September 10, 2024 British Medical Journal Mental Health, Burnout Syndrome, Suicide Prevention A global team of researchers conducted a study aimed to assess suicide rates among male and female physicians compared to the general population, focusing on identifying factors contributing to variations in these rates. Researchers hypothesised that while physician suicide rates have declined over time, gender differences persist, with female physicians at higher risk. Previous research highlighted issues like stigma, underreporting, and varying working condition s as potential influencers of physician suicide rates. A systematic search of Medline, PsycINFO, and Embase from 1960 to March 31, 2024, was conducted. Inclusion Criteria : Studies had to report physician suicide rates compared to a reference population. Studies focusing only on suicide methods, non-fatal attempts, or lacking detailed data on physician deaths were excluded. Key Findings : The suicide rate ratio for female physicians was significantly higher (1.76) compared to the general population. Male physicians had a non-significant increase in suicide rate ratio (1.05), similar to the general population. A decline in suicide rates was observed, particularly for male physicians, possibly due to improved mental health support and awareness. High variability across studies suggested the influence of geographical, cultural, and methodological differences. Concerns were raised about potential underreporting of physician suicides , which may distort the findings. Although the study included data from 20 countries, certain regions were underrepresented, potentially limiting the finding’s generalizability. Implications : The study emphasised the need for targeted mental health interventions for female physicians , who face a higher risk of suicide. Click here to more

Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024: Fight for a period friendly world Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024: Fight for a period friendly world Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar June 8, 2024 United Nations Population Fund Global health, Menstrual health, Women health The essential elements for good menstrual health are safe, acceptable, and reliable supplies to manage menstruation, privacy to change, a safe and private wash facility, and the ability to make informed choices. It is of utmost urgency that health and development policies prioritize menstrual health, as this issue intersects with human rights, public health, gender equality, and sustainable development. Policies should be targeted to eliminate period poverty , as in low-income countries where girls still struggle to afford menstrual products and have only limited access to sanitation services. UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) has taken measures to reach people through education initiatives, safe sanitation facilities, such as in displacement camps, and dignity kits, such as supplies and underwear. India's G20 leadership: Ambitious renewable goals amid fossil fuel dilemma India's G20 leadership: Ambitious renewable goals amid fossil fuel dilemma Content Editor: Dr. Purnoor Kaur October 12, 2023 International Health News G20 Summit, Renewable Energy, Environment, One health One of the final decisions of the G20 over climate change was to triple the 2030 renewable energy target. The joint statement highlighted that $5.8-5.9T is needed for 2030 climate goals in low and middle-income countries. Although India champions a green agenda, no clear fossil fuel phase-out plan exists. Also, there has been an expression of reluctance against phasing out fossil fuels. Despite the country's increase in renewable energy capacity, coal fuels 70% of Indian electricity. G20 countries contribute 85% of global GDP and 80% of emissions. Also, India and China blocked a call during the COP 26 summit in Glasgow in 2021 to include phasing out coal use in the final declaration. However, transitioning to renewable energy is beneficial for the health of the individuals.

02. China stops publishing daily COVID figures since yesterday 02. China stops publishing daily COVID figures since yesterday December 26, 2022 The Hindu COVID-19, Global Health China’s National Health Commission (NHC) stopped publishing daily COVID-19 data on Sunday, amid doubts about their reliability as infections have exploded in the wake of an abrupt easing of tough restrictions. “Relevant COVID information will be published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for reference and research,” the commission said. It did not cite reasons or say how frequently China CDC will update COVID information. The NHC’s halt to reporting daily infection comes as concerns grow around the lack of vital information since Beijing made sweeping changes to a zero-COVID policy that put millions of its citizens under lockdowns and battered the economy.

Clean air dream deferred: CSE Report highlights shortcomings in NCAP Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi July 24, 2024 at 4:49:27 PM Air quality, public health The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change introduced The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) in January 2019. The goal is to reduce particle pollution by up to 40% by 2025–2026 compared to the base year of 2019–20 . Setting clean air targets for 131 designated unhealthy cities is a first for the country. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has raised concerns about the NCAP, stating it risks becoming merely a dust control initiative. Key points from their recent assessment include: 1. 64% of NCAP and 15th Finance Commission funds have been spent on road dust mitigation, with minimal allocation for controlling emissions from industries, vehicles, and biomass burning. 2 . The current focus on PM10 as the benchmark for city performance should shift to the more harmful PM2.5. 3. There is a disconnect between the NCAP and Swachh Bharat Survekshan performance metrics, leading to inconsistencies in city rankings. 4. NCAP must support energy transitions across industries, transport, and households, and integrate sustainable mobility and waste management practices. 5. Of the funds utilized, disparities exist in fund allocation between different cities. CSE emphasizes the need for repurposed strategies to effectively improve air quality.
