Are the health systems equipped with resources to tackle the growing burden of fungal infections? Are the health systems equipped with resources to tackle the growing burden of fungal infections? Content Editor: Dr. Swathi Shenoy July 10, 2024 Indian Journal of Medical Research Fungal Infections, One Health, Infectious diseases In the past few decades, there has been an increase in new and re-emergent fungal diseases, which are known to primarily affect animals. The “one health” approach is the best way to combat such novel diseases . A review emphasizing the importance of integrating this approach to control the growing global fungal infections. The review highlights that the current health systems have been geared against viral infections due to COVID-19; however, the systems need to be more robust in handling the growing fungal infections. Fungal infections lead to over 2 million deaths annually , but this census is often concealed by listing the deaths under the underlying disease. A few essential fungal infections that have wreaked havoc include: Human outbreaks of Sporothrix brasiliensis Fungal keratitis related to agricultural activities Sporotrichosis related to unprotected horticultural activities Some of the recommendations provided by the review are as follows: Routine use of simple and inexpensive diagnostic tests will reduce unnecessary anti-bacterial therapy. Restriction of the use of azole fungicides in agriculture to reduce the emergence of resistance Cautious development of newer azoles for the treatment of these infections. Click here to read more.

- Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors
Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors Understanding Physician's Suicide: Gender Disparities and Contributing Factors Content Editor: Dr. Sumana September 10, 2024 British Medical Journal Mental Health, Burnout Syndrome, Suicide Prevention A global team of researchers conducted a study aimed to assess suicide rates among male and female physicians compared to the general population, focusing on identifying factors contributing to variations in these rates. Researchers hypothesised that while physician suicide rates have declined over time, gender differences persist, with female physicians at higher risk. Previous research highlighted issues like stigma, underreporting, and varying working condition s as potential influencers of physician suicide rates. A systematic search of Medline, PsycINFO, and Embase from 1960 to March 31, 2024, was conducted. Inclusion Criteria : Studies had to report physician suicide rates compared to a reference population. Studies focusing only on suicide methods, non-fatal attempts, or lacking detailed data on physician deaths were excluded. Key Findings : The suicide rate ratio for female physicians was significantly higher (1.76) compared to the general population. Male physicians had a non-significant increase in suicide rate ratio (1.05), similar to the general population. A decline in suicide rates was observed, particularly for male physicians, possibly due to improved mental health support and awareness. High variability across studies suggested the influence of geographical, cultural, and methodological differences. Concerns were raised about potential underreporting of physician suicides , which may distort the findings. Although the study included data from 20 countries, certain regions were underrepresented, potentially limiting the finding’s generalizability. Implications : The study emphasised the need for targeted mental health interventions for female physicians , who face a higher risk of suicide. Click here to more
