  • Predictors of modern contraceptive methods' usage in Pakistan

Predictors of modern contraceptive methods' usage in Pakistan Predictors of modern contraceptive methods' usage in Pakistan Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami April 30, 2024 PLoS ONE Reproductive health, contraceptives Pakistan has exceeded South Asia's annual growth rate (1.2%) at its current rate of 2.5% , with a high fertility rate of 3.56 births per woman . Despite the introduction of the Costed Implementation Plan in 2020, the utilization of MCM is just 26.1% in the region, as found in this study. The most common short-term methods were condoms, pills, and injectables , while long-term methods were less common (among them, implants and IUDs were used). The most accurate predictors of MCM usage were reported as -Number of children (4 or more), - mother’s education (primary level), - husband’s education (middle level), - postnatal care visits of the mother, Lady Health Worker’s counseling as part of post-natal visits The study showed that women preferred to use MCMs to limit their family size rather than for spacing, particularly among older women, hence, there is a high unmet need for younger women to utilize MCMs to space out their pregnancy. The study underscored the need for counseling and guidance for women, especially during the postnatal period, and spousal support to increase the uptake of MCMs . Click here to read more.

  • Impact of the Texas abortion ban law 2021: Increase in infant deaths

Impact of the Texas abortion ban law 2021: Increase in infant deaths Impact of the Texas abortion ban law 2021: Increase in infant deaths Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar July 17, 2024 John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Reproductive and sexual health, Infant mortality, Public laws, Abortion Texas law prohibiting abortion if heartbeat is detected came into effect from September 1, 2021. It didn’t allow exemptions for congenital anomalies, either. A new study by Johns Hopkins researchers is the first study that examines how Texas abortion bans have impacted infant deaths in the state and also the first to present evidence evaluating recent abortion bans and pre-viability restrictions. There was a 12.7% increase above the expected 1,697 infant deaths for this period, as 1913 deaths were observed. It found a similar pattern in neonatal deaths, with an estimated 145 excess deaths in the post-policy period, which were not observed in other states. Researchers also found that Texas had an atypical increase in infant deaths due to congenital anomalies. As per the records, infant deaths attributed to congenital anomalies increased by 22.9% in Texas between 2021 and 2022, whereas the rest of the U.S. had a decrease of 3.1% during the same period.
