Improper sleep and type 2 diabetes mellitus: The non-linear relationship Content Editor: Dr. Shubham August 12, 2024 at 4:00:00 PM Lifestyle, Noncommunicable diseases, Public health Participants with irregular sleep patterns (where day-to-day sleep duration varied by more than 60 minutes) had a 34% higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared to those with regular sleep. Even after accounting for lifestyle, comorbidities, family history, and obesity indicators, the risk persisted, emphasising on the point that consistent sleep patterns are crucial for reducing diabetes risk. The study discovered a nonlinear connection (p nonlinearity 0.0002), with a 34% higher incidence of diabetes (95% CI 1.22, 1.47) in those whose sleep length SD was >60 min as opposed to ≤60 min. The within-person standard deviation of the 7-day sleep duration recorded by wrist-worn accelerometers was used to quantify the variability in sleep lengths. Those with greater sleep duration (P interaction < 0.0009) and a lower diabetes polygenic risk score (PRS; P interaction ≤ 0.0264) showed a stronger connection irrespective of genetic predisposition. The study identified consistent sleep as a strategy to lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes , and it can help mitigate risks like reducing swings in hormones, including cortisol, which affect blood sugar levels. Exclusive use of LPG gas: The health and economic benefits Exclusive use of LPG gas: The health and economic benefits Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala September 12, 2024 Vital Strategies Air Pollution, Health Economics, Study Findings Using the Air Pollution Burden of Disease Explorer tool the researchers at “Vital Strategies”, a global organization for Public Health, estimated changes in rates of morbidity and mortality following interventions aimed at reducing air pollution in houses where unclean fuel is being used. Baseline estimates were taken from the “2017 Global Burden of Disease and Comparative Risk Assessment” on data related to rates of illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ischemic heart disease, diabetes etc., and their relationship with PM 2.5. The study concluded that the introduction and consistent use of LPG in households previously reliant on unclean fuels could potentially prevent around 150,000 deaths annually, even if other sources of air pollution remain unchanged. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal contribute to half of the mortality and morbidity due to household air pollution. The state-wise analysis includes those families who i) are registered with Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) but donot use it exclusively; ii) those who are not beneficiaries of PMUY. Targeted subsidies for households with pregnant women were found to be cost-effective with a cost-benefit ratio of <1, indicating economic benefit in addition to the health benefits. This result was based on the analysis of four scenarios: Full subsidy provision for eight annual refills to all households Partial subsidy provision for eight annual refills to all households Full subsidy provision for households with pregnant women Targeted partial subsidy provision for households with pregnant women. The above study emphasises on the need to overcome the problems faced in implementing the PMUY owing to its health and economic benefits on exclusive use of LPG gas Click here to read more

They are highly motivated to do so. However, they frequently lack the means and space to turn their ideas into effective activities and achieve their full potential. This seminar will provide a platform for young policymakers to be heard by those creating policy. Previous Next
