WHO report : Health and humanitarian crisis in Sudan WHO report : Health and humanitarian crisis in Sudan Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay July 16, 2024 WHO News Section WHO Report, Sudan Crisis, International Health News Since April 2023, the conflict in Sudan has forcibly displaced 10 million individuals within the country and an additional 2 million to neighboring nations like Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, and the Central African Republic. Approximately 15 million people urgently require healthcare assistance , but only 26% of the necessary funding has been secured. Food insecurity plagues 7.6 million people , with 6.3 million facing emergency-level food shortages . Compounding the crisis are multiple disease outbreaks, including measles, cholera, malaria, dengue, and meningitis. The situation is dire, with over 3.6 million children and 1.2 million pregnant or breastfeeding women acutely malnourished , and a significant risk of famine in several regions. Operational efforts include enhanced disease surveillance, support for health facilities, and trauma rehabilitation. However, challenges persist due to restricted access, security issues, and supply chain disruptions, further exacerbated by the rainy season. Coordination among 49 partner organizations aims to provide essential services and address gender-based violence. Immediate action and increased support are crucial to mitigate this overwhelming humanitarian catastrophe. Click here to read more .

Rising number of measles cases in the United States Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay Kelkar March 19, 2024 at 4:00:00 PM Measles, Disease Outbreak, Infectious diseases, International Health News As measles cases rise across the United States, Chicago has reported its second case this year. One case involved a child recovering from measles at a migrant shelter in Pilsen. The Chicago Department of Public Health is verifying residents' vaccination status and offering vaccines to the unvaccinated. The other case, Chicago's first since 2019, involved an individual exposed to domestic and international travelers. However, the infection source is still unknown. The health department is actively tracing exposures, particularly at Swedish Hospital and on a specific bus route. These Chicago cases reflect the national trend, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 45 total U.S. cases this year across 17 states. In January, the CDC had anticipated this increase due to global trends and decreasing vaccination rates. The recent local and national cases underscore the critical importance of high vaccination rates to prevent outbreaks . Previous Next

Epidemiological study of Mpox outbreak: Understanding the complexities of control Content Editor: Dr. Sangya September 14, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM International Health News, International Outbreak, Mpox In January 2023, a suspected mpox case in South Ubangi Province, DRC, was linked to cross-border travel from the Central African Republic (CAR). The index case, a man from Bangui, CAR, who frequently traveled between CAR and the DRC(Democratic Republic of Congo), fell ill with fever, headache, chills, and a rash after potential exposure to wildlife meat. He died in Mbaya General Reference Hospital nine days later. Contact tracing revealed two clusters: the first, linked to CAR, involved three symptomatic family contacts, with two testing positive for the MPXV genome. The second cluster, identified in the same hospital, included three suspected cases with no direct link to the first cluster but had temporal and spatial connections. Phylogenetic analysis of MPXV sequences from the clusters showed that all cases belonged to clade I a and were related to historical CAR cases, though direct links between CAR and DRC were inconclusive. The investigation also identified 109 suspected cases in the DRC from January to November 2023, with 56% confirmed positive for MPXV. The study underscores the complexity of managing mpox with zoonotic and human-to-human transmission dynamics, highlighting the need for improved regional surveillance, international cooperation, and addressing challenges like porous borders, disease stigma, and population displacement.
