Cases of Nipah on the rise in Bangladesh Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy March 6, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Outbreak, Nipah virus, Bangladesh, Zoonotic disease In Bangladesh, outbreaks of the Nipah virus (NiV) are seasonal. Cases often take place between December and April, coinciding with the collection and ingestion of date palm sap , which is known to be associated with disease incidence. Two epidemiologically discrete cases of Nipah were reported by the Bangladesh national focal point for International Health Regulations on January 30 and February 7, 2024. The first case was a 38-year-old man, admitted on Jan 11, confirmed as NiV on Jan 21, and passed away on Jan 28. Both of these cases gave a positive history of consumption of raw date palm sap. All 158 (91+67) close and community contacts in both cases tested negative for NiV. In response, WHO has called for measures to prevent bats’ access to date palm sap . It also released advisories reiterating that date palm juice should be boiled before consumption and fruits with bat bites should always be discarded. WHO assessed regional level risk (India, Myanmar) to be moderate but the global risk of NiV to be low. Previous Next

  • Global surge in measles: Need to bridge the vaccination gap | PH Chronicle

Global surge in measles: Need to bridge the vaccination gap Content Editor: Dr Chinmay November 21, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Measles, vaccination, International Health News Global measles cases rose by 20% in 2023, totaling 10.3 million, primarily due to insufficient vaccination coverage, according to WHO and CDC. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine, over 22 million children missed their first dose last year, with only 83% receiving the first dose and 74% completing the two-dose schedule. Achieving 95% vaccination coverage is essential to prevent outbreaks. Measles caused 107,500 deaths in 2023, mostly among children under five. While this reflects an 8% reduction in mortality from 2022, largely due to better healthcare access in affected regions, the disease remains a significant threat. Survivors often face severe complications, including blindness and brain damage. Outbreaks affected 57 countries, with nearly half in Africa, highlighting gaps in immunization programs. Efforts to eliminate measles require strengthening routine vaccinations, enhancing surveillance, and conducting high-coverage campaigns, especially in vulnerable regions. Partnerships aim to accelerate progress towards global measles eradication . Click here to read more. Previous Next

Need for New Law- For manufactured chemicals in protecting children’s health Content Editor: Dr Soundhar February 22, 2025 at 2:22:29 PM Children’s health, environmental health, Health policy Safeguarding children’s health against synthetic chemicals requires a fundamental shift in chemical law to take a precautionary approach over unconstrained production. Fewer than 20% chemicals have been tested for toxicity, and it’s still fewer when it comes to toxic effects in infants and children. Unlike pharmaceuticals, synthetic chemicals have little assessment for health impacts and almost no post-marketing surveillance for long-term adverse effects. Most synthetic chemicals and products are produced from fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal. Yet, they are subjected to few legal or policy constraints. There was a 50-fold increase since 1950, and it is projected to triple again by 2050 , which has led to widespread human exposure and environmental pollution, too. Association between chemicals and disease in children continue to rise with distressing frequency, with still many additional diseases undiscovered. Previous Next
