Does undernourishment amplify tuberculosis risk? Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi May 7, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Tuberculosis, Infectious disease, Undernutrition A recent study in Clinical Infectious Diseases revealed that malnourished individuals in households with tuberculosis (TB) exposure are three times more likely to develop TB, despite not necessarily having a higher risk of initial Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. It was conducted across multiple centers in India and involved 857 household contacts of TB patients diagnosed within two months. Of these, 27.9% were underweight, with a median age of 29 years, and 59% were females, monitored for 24 months. During follow-up, 18 new TB cases emerged, with 10 among underweight contacts and four developing early TB with severe malnutrition (BMI <16), resulting in a hazard ratio of 3.16 for TB disease. The authors stress recognizing malnutrition's role in TB progression to refine transmission models and interventions, urging timely provision of adequate household rations alongside preventive therapy by TB programs. Amid climate change and pandemics, Gavi will adjust co-financing and eligibility criteria to sustain immunization programs and enhance health security. The alliance aims to bolster vaccine manufacturing in Africa through the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) and has set up a $500 million First Response Fund for rapid pandemic intervention. New vaccines for tuberculosis, dengue fever, group B streptococcus, hepatitis-E, and mpox have been approved, with COVID-19 vaccinations to phase out by 2025, shifting focus to emergency preparedness. Gavi remains committed to tackling outbreaks like measles and cholera, aligning with its mission to promote sustainable immunization and global health resilience. Shift towards emergency response mechanisms post-2025, with ongoing support for current outbreak responses, including mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are among the future COVID-19 plans. - Bangladesh conquers Kala-Azar menace | PH Chronicle
Bangladesh conquers Kala-Azar menace Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma November 22, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Kala Azar, Neglected Tropical Diseases A monumental achievement for Bangladesh: WHO validates sustained kala-azar reduction, with reported cases below 1 per 10,000 in all subdistricts for three consecutive years. Kala-Azar is caused by Leishmania spp. And is transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies. It threatens the rural areas with poverty, poor housing, and malnutrition. If left untreated, it can be fatal in over 95% of cases. In 2005, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal initiated the Regional Kala-Azar Elimination Initiative, which was further updated in 2012 for continued elimination efforts. Tools that were crucial in the early detection and treatment of kala-azar in remote places included: rK39 test Liposomal amphotericin B Miltefosine In 2022, there were only 47 kala-azar cases in Bangladesh and 1069 in the Southeast Asia Region, the historic lowest number till now. Further, Bangladesh eliminated lymphatic filariasis in May 2023, making it the first country to eliminate two tropical diseases in one year. Previous Next

Interleukin-5: The new hope for remission of asthma? Interleukin-5: The new hope for remission of asthma? Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 4, 2024 Nature Immunology Asthma, Immunology, Drug Trials A study published in Nature Immunology by researchers at the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology at Tsinghua University, Beijing, looked at Interleukin-5 (IL-5) as a target for asthma interventions. Type 2 Asthma is driven by IL-5-driven eosinophilia, while IL-4 and IL-13 cause airway remodeling and inflammation. Using IL-5 as the targeting domain, long-lived chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells were created, called functional IL-5 CAR T cells (5TIF) . These cells were modified to release an IL-4 and IL-13 signaling called 5TIF4 cells . A trial in fully immunocompetent mice without any conditioning regimen showed sustained inflammation repression and symptom alleviation . As asthma is highly prevalent and dangerous, with 300 million people affected and 250,000 people killed annually, this single dose of CAR T cells leading to long-term remission of asthma can be a major tool in reducing the disease burden.
